UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. GLOVER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO H. MAXIMILIAN STARKLOFF AND JOSEPH DE L. GAL- VIN, OF SAME PLACE, ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
MONKEY-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,557, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed June 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GLovER, of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mon- 5 key-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This is an improvement on my invention in monkey-wrenches described and claimed in Letters Patent No. 198,196, dated December 18,1877; and my improvement consists in placing upon the screw-stem c a screw-threaded sleeve or externally-threaded nut, which turns on the stem and screws in the handle, so as to give means for limited positive ad- I justment of the moving jaw A.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the improvement at w w, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at y Figs. 1, 2, and 4. Fig. 4
is a detail longitudinal section at as m, Fig. -1. Fig. 5 is a transverse section at z 2, Figs. 1, 2, and 1.
All the figures show the parts in the same position-namely, with the jaw A capable of free movement in the handle.
I will use the same lettering as in my former patent for the similar parts.
A is the outer jaw or head, whose shank it works through the other jaw, B, and in the handle B. The shank a. has alongitudinal aperture, to, at its inner end to receive the screw-threaded stem 0. Atthe outer end of the apertureis a socket, screw-threaded at a a to engage with the stem 0 when it is in the position shown in Fig. 4. The stem 0 is flat on two opposite sides, 0 c and the remaining opposite sides, 0 0 are screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded part or parts of the socket. The socket is grooved out at opposite sides, at a a, to make a space larger in diameter than the stem from c to 0 so that when the stem is in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 5 the shank a can be moved freely in the handle; but by giving the stem c a quarter-turn, which is done by means of the thumb-knob O, the screw-threaded parts 0 c and a? a are made to engage together, and the jaw A is made fast.
I) is a screw or pin which enters recess 0 in the side of the stem 0, and limits the turning movement of the stem to a quarter-turn by (No model.)
the impingement of the sides of the recess against the end of the screw. The outward movement of the stem is limited by the impingement of the inner end of the recess against the end of the screw or pin I).
D is a screw or pin, whose point enters the aperture a and prevents the removal of the shank a from the handle B by impinging against the bridge a E is an eXteriorly-threaded nut, which turns as a sleeve upon the cylindrical part of the stem 0. The nut has outer bearing against thumb-knob O, and its inner end bears against a pin, 0 Thus the nut E turns freely upon the stem, but is incapable of endwise movement upon it, and consequently as the nut is screwed inward or outward in the screwthreaded socket in the end of the handle B the stem is moved with it, and when the stem c is in the position shown in Fig. 4 thejaw A is caused to move with them. The nut E has a milled collar, 0, by which it is turned.
The operation is as follows: Supposing the stem to be in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 5 3, and 5, the jaw A may be freely moved to or from the jaw B. By giving the stem a quarter-turn the screws 0 o are made to engage with the screws a a and the jaw A is held in position. Now, if it is desired to change the position of the jaw A, it may be done by turning the nut E,and by this means the jaws may be tightened upon any object or disengaged from it.
As a modification the nut E may simply 8 turn in the handle without endwise movement therein and screw upon the stem 0, the endwise movement of the stem being effected by turning the nut.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a monkey-wrench, of handle B, shank a, and stem 0 with the nut E, adapted to operate in connection therewith, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of shank a, handle B, 5 nut E, pin b, and flattened stem 0, having recess 0 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. GLOVER. Witnesses:
H. M. STARKLOFF, GEO. H. KNIGHT.
