JAMES A. MALONEY, OF GEORGETOWN, AND JAMES COMPTON, OF
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
NAILLESS BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,434, dated August 24, 1880.
- Application filed October 15, 1879.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMEs A. MALONEY, of Georgetown, and JAMES CoMP'roN, of Washington, both in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ailless Boxes for Tobacco; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a novel method of constructing boxes for containing tobacco or other material; and it consists in joining the box and fastening the lid orcover without the use of nails or other metallic fastenings.
In the drawin gs, Figure 1 represents a view of our box while under the press; Fig. 2, a perspective view of box with its lid locked in position. Fig. '3 is a plan view of lid or cover; Fig. 4, a perspective view, partlyin section, of box; Fig. 5, perspective view of locking device.
Arepresents our box; B, the lid or cover; C C, cross-pieces for fastening lid a a, mortises or openings to receive ends of cross-pieces C C; b I), dovetail fastenings to sides of box; IE, bottom of box; 0, tongue and groove on bottom of box.
The mode of constructing our box is as follows: Two pieces forming sides, with grooves cut in them, are placed against the sides of the bottom, having a tongue and groove formed upon it. Then first one of the remaining sides is driven in position, and then the other, leaving the box complete to be packed and placed under the press. After the head has been first placed in position the pressure is applied until the cross-piece forming the fastening for the top reaches the mortise on each side of the box near the top, when the operator turns the locking medium upon the end of the screw, and the ends of the cross-piece ride into position in the mortises or openings, and the box is then released from the press.
By the use of our invention we claim a very great economy over the old method of constructing and packing tobacco-boxes.
While we have shown and described two removable sides to our box, we do not confine ourselves thereto, as one side only may be made removable, if desired.
Another advantage our box possesses over the old style is the great convenience it offers to dealers, from the fact that one side and the top can be opened without the least difficuity by simply driving out one side from its position in a vertical line after the head has been released from its position.
The press and attachment for locking the lid in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, form no part of this application for patent.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a box, the combination of the lid and the independently-rotating cross-piece with the sides having mortises arranged in them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of a box-body having two removable sides having mortises arranged in them, of a lid and a movable crosspiece, the cross-piece, by one of its arms, locking the lid in position, and by its other arm locking the two removable sides and the lid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a box, the combination of a lid adapted to receive external pressure and to move vertically along the inner sides of a box, and having a rotary locking device, with a box adapted to receive the lid and securely engage the lockin g device, whereby the box may be packed and the lid secured while under pressure, substantially as set forth.
4.. In a box for tobacco, &c., the combination of the sides with their dovetail fastenings and a mortise in the top portion of each side, together with the lid having a locking device working into said mortises or openings, and a bottom attached to said sides by engaging a groove on the two opposite sides of the box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony .that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES A. MALONEY. JAMES COMPTON.
