NITED STATES THOMAS BALMER, OF-OHIGAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Letters Patent No. 226,154, dated Aprl 6, 1880. Application filed December 13, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concm:
- Be it known that I, THOMAS BALMER, of Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have nvented an Improvement in Tobacco-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. V i
The nature of my invention relates to new and useful inprovenents in the Construction of boxes in which what is known tothe trade as plug-tobacco is packed for sh pment under pressure. v
lt is usual to place a box with the head removed in the press, and the box being filled with the tobacco the latter is compressed by the action of the press, after which the head is inserted and secured in the ordinary and practiced manner. The same time and labor are required, and the same changes are necessary to be made in the press for each successive box, no matter what its size.
The object I have in View is to so construct a box for the purpose that, in efi ect, two or more boxes of tobacco may be packed without so much labor and time as are required by the usual method.
In order to accomplish this end I present i my invention, which will be fully understood froni the following description.
Figure l is a sectional perspective showing my improved construction, showing two boxes, in eff'ect, packed with only one manipulation of the press. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line nc w in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional per-- spective of the lower half of Fig. l.
In the acconpanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a box provided with a head, B, which is secured in the usual manner. This box is filled about h lf-way up with tobacco and subjected to the action of the press, when the head C is put in place, and the cleats D, being of equal width, are nailed to the sides of the box by a series of nails, d, along each edge of the cleats; then a loose block of wood, E, of the' same thickness as the width of the cleats, is laid upon the head G, and the head F is laid upon the cleats, thus forming the bottom of another box in reality, while the head C forms the top of the lower box shown in the drawings. Tobacco is again filled in and subjected to the action of the press, 'and the head G put in place and secured in the ordinary manner.
We now have, for instance, a forty-pound box or two twenty-pound boxes, for by sawing through the sides of the box and through the cleats between the two series of nails therein, as indicated by dotted line gin Fig. 1, the forty-pound box is divided so as to make two twenty-pound boxes.
The block E is inserted as described, in order to prevent the action of the press when brought to bear upon the tobacco in the upper chamber or box from springing the bottom F of that section, and, of course, this block is released when the box is sawed in two.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A packing-box consisting of the sides A, head B, central heads, C F, cleats D, and upper head, G, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The method of making` and filling tobaccoboxes, consisting of first filling a portion of the box; second, compressing the tobacco; third, inserting the head in place; fourth, fastening the head by cleats fi'fth, placing a center block and a head; and, sixth, filling another portion of the box and securing its head, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' THOMAS BALMER. Wtnesses:
H. S. SPRAGUF A. BARTHEL.
