To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY B. ADAMS, of the city, county, and State of New York. am the inventor of an Improved Wrin ger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.v

My invention relates to a wringer adapted to wrin g mops, towels, napkins, and such similar fabrics as have no projections from their' surface, such as buttons, &c.; and my invention consists in a wrin ger composed of a frame adapted to be clamped upon the rim of a pail and provided with suitable clamping devices for that purpose, and earryin g one of the wringing-rollers, together with a jaw hinged to the said frame, and carrying the other wringingl roller, said jaw being arranged to swing on said frame, so that the upper roller may be closed down upon the lower roller during the operation of wringing, or may be raised, so as to entirely separate the rollers, at pleasure, the upper roller, whichv is carried by the hinged jaw, being so arranged that whenv the said roller is closed down upon the lower roller, in the operation of wringing, the former will fall somewhat to the side of the axial line of the latter, whereby an increased pressure'or gripe between the rollers is had, together with flanges and guards arranged on the frame B, as here'- inafter particularly set forth, whereby the entanglement of the material wrung in the joint of the jaws or 1n the bearings of the rollers is prevented, but said material is guided properly between the rollers, wherebythe escapel at the ends of the rollers of the water squeezed from the material passed between the rollersis prevented.

The drawing is a view, in perspective, of my improved wringer, showing the same clamped upon the brim of a pail.

B is the frame, which is irregularly semicircular in general outline, to conform t0 the rim of a pail, and has the clamps b and b', by means of which it is adapted to be secured upon the rim of the pail. In this frame is mounted the lower roller, C', arranged to turn loosely in its bearings. A is the jaw, hinged to the frame at g,and carrying the upperroller, C. These rollers mayboth be luted, as shown, or they may be made smooth, although it is desirable for the perfect operation of the wringer that the upper or power roller, at least, should be fluted. This upper roller, G, has a crank, o, by which it is turnedand the material from the pail thus passed .through the wringer.

The jaw has a handle, a, by which it and the frame may be conveniently pressed together. A stop, b2, limit-s the downward movement of the jaw A when the rollers are brought together. The roller G in the jaw is set in its bearings somewhat nearer to the hinge g of the jaws than is the roller C of the frame B. This may be conveniently done by 'making the jaw A somewhat shorter from the hinge g to the axial line of the roller C than the frameB from the hinge to the same line of its roller G'. By means of this construction and arrangement of parts, when the jaw A is closed down upon frame B, the roller C will pass somewhat to the side of the axial line of the roller C', and a greater amount of gripe or pressure between the tworollers will thus be secured by the same amount of force exerted downward.

The frame B is provided with clamps b b,to secure the wringer on the brim of a pail or other vessel, and one of these clamps, b', is pivoted to the said frame B so that it has a lateral swing thereon, and thereby renders it possible to readily attach the wringer to pails or vessels of different sizes.

Upon the frame B, at b3, on both sides, are

upwardlyprojecting fianges or guides, as

shown, which extend along the frame, conforming to its outline, from the hinge gto the line of the rollers when closed together, and serve, when the wringer is operated, to guide the material being wrung properly between the rollers C C', and prevent the same from passing or falling beyond the ends of the rollers or becoming entangled in the hinge or roller-bearings. Upon the frame B, at either end off its roller C', are the upwardly-projecting guards b4, which extend rearwardly along the line of the frame B from the bearings of the roller C', and are somewhat flaring in shape, so that when the jaw A is closed down the ends of the roller C will pass within and be nclosed by said guards b4. By means of IOO these guards, when the cloth or mop is passed through the Wringer, the escape at the ends of the rollers of the Water squeezed from the cloth or mop is prevented.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A Wringer composed of the frame B, adapted to rest upon the upper edge of' a pail, and provided with fixed clamps b and adjustable clamp b', and carrying the roller C', and the jaw A, pivoted to the said frame and provided with the handle a, and carrying the roller C, that is provided with the crank c, all

constructed and combined to operate as and` for the purpose described.

2. In a Wringer composed of the frame B, adapted to be clamped upon the riln of a pail, and carrying the roller G, and having the hinged jaw A, carrying the roller C, the npwardly-projecting guide-flan ges b: on the frame, extending along the line thereof from the hinge of the jaw to the line of the rollers when closed, as described, and for the purpose specified. i

3. In a wringer composed of the frame B, adapted to be clamped upon the rim of a pail, and carrying the roller G', and having the hinged jaw A, carrying the roller C, arranged in relation to each other as set forth, the outwardly-darin g guards b, extending rearwardly along the line of the frame from the bearings of its roller, as described, and for the purpose specified.
