Panta-loon Hanger. No. 230,513. v Patented July 27,1880,
file/afar.- MM m Wkwm h N- PEFERS, FlwmUTHGRAPMER. WASHINGTON. I!v c SHERBURN WHEELWRIGHT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF-ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO CHAS. J. JAMES AND SAMUEL V. BARRON, 'OF SAME PLACE, ONE-FOURTH TO EACH.
PANTALOONS-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,513, dated July 27, 1880. Application filed May 21, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SHERBURN WHEEL- WRIGHT, a citizen of the United ,States, residin g in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pantaloons-Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to rods for suspending pantaloons by the waistband.
It has for its object the supply of a very I 5 light metallic supporting device which shall be adapted to all sizes of pantaloons ,and which will serve to gently stretch the waistband and support it fully, both from the back and front buttons, without sagging, and to afford, by means of a central hook, a ready means of han ging up the pantaloons thus supported free from objectionable folds or creases.
It consists in the formation of a light truss to serve as the supporting device or hanger, the truss being composed of an upper rod of metal curved from end to end, and whose eX- tremities project to engage the pantaloons, and of a second lower curved rod whose ends are secured to the first at points equidistant 0 from its center, and which is placed with its curve reversed, so that an elliptical space shall be included between the two, the truss being completed by a central cross-rod arranged to tie and brace apart the two longitudinal curved 5 rods in the middle. The projecting ends of the upper rod are each bent or corrugated to form one or more loops or notches to engage the outer front suspender-buttons of a pair of pants. The center of this upper rod is also 4o bent into a loop or ring to receive a hook for the suspension of the trussed hanger carrying the pantaloons. Two wire hooks are provided to swing freely on the upper rod, one on each side of the center, to engage the rear suspen- 5 tier-buttons and prevent a sagging of the rear portion of the pantaloons band when suspended by the end hooks.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure IS an elevation of my lmproved device as applied to a pair of pantaloons, the front edge of the waistband being broken away to show the engagement of the swinging books with the rear suspender-buttons represented in dotted lines.
A is the upper rod of the hanger, formed of stout wire and curved from end to end. This curved rod is bent in the center to form an outwardly-projecting loop, B. terminating in a ring, C, and the lower end of the loop is closed by a transverse wire rod, D, bent at each end over and upon the main rod, so as to form a connection therewith, and, in effect, a continuation thereof.
E is the lower rod of the hanger, formed, likewise, of stout wire curved from end to end. This wire is secured beneath the upper wire, A, so that its curve shall be opposed to that of said upper wire, and its ends are bent over and upon the upper wire and thereto @cured at points about equidistant from the central loop, B.
The center of the lower rod, E, is connected to the center of the upper rod, A, or to the rod D, closing its central loop by means of a transverse wire rod, E, which is secured at each end, and forms a brace, serving to keep the upper and lower rods in proper relative position and to complete the truss formed thereby. The ends of the upper rod, A, of the truss are made to project beyond the ends of the lower rod, E, and are bent to form one or more loops, G G, adapted to engage the buttons of the pantaloons. By forming a number of loops, Gr Gr, the truss is adapted for use with pantaicons of different dimensions,-the proximate loops serving-to engage buttons upon narrow 8 waists, and those farther removed the buttons upon pants of larger dimensions.
. Eli are swinging hooks secured to the upper rod, A, one upon each side of its center,
and which are of such length as to readily o reach and support the back buttons or the waistband of the pants when the front buttons are engaged by the looped ends of the rod. These hooks H H are free to slide upon the rod, so that they are easily brought into proper 5 position to engage the buttons.
The ring U in the center of the upper rod may be formed without the loop B, thus dispensing with the transverse wire D; but the use of the loop is advantageous in bringing the rod upon each side of the ring into the same plane and in preventing the formation of a heavy knot, consequent upon the wrapping of the end of the brace-rod F about the double thickness of the ring which is required to fasten said brace.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The truss pantaloons-hanger consisting of an upper curved rod provided with loops at its ends, an oppositely-curved rod Whose ends are secured to the first, and a transverse bracerod serving to maintain the central interval SHERBURN WHEELWRIGHT.
