UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED HALL, OF PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY.
TERRA-GOTTA KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,479, dated July 27, 1880.
A plication filed June 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED HALL, of Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Terra-Gotta Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement, shown as applied to a kiln. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the forward part of the kiln. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the door.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to construct the doors of kilns for burning terra-cotta in such a way that the heat will be distributed equally through the door and the other parts of the kiln so that all parts of the kiln will have a uniform temperature, and all the articles will be burned evenly.
The invention consists in constructing a door'for terra-cotta kilns with flues in its inner part com municatin with and forming continuations of the ordinary lines in the kilnwall, and connected with the furnaces by fines, whereby auniiorm distribution of heat all around the kiln will be effected, and all the articles in the kiln will be burned evenly, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the furnace-doors, B the ashpits, and O the door'of the kiln D. To the side parts of the door-frame are attach ed plates E, which project at the sides of the door, and have eyes formed in their outer ends to receive pins F. The pins F also pass through holes in the ends of the U bars or clevises Gr, between which ends the eyes of the plates E are placed. The bends of the bars Gr pass through eyes formed upon the ends of the bands H, passed around the kiln D to strengthen it.
Upon the inner ends of the plates E are formed eyes to receive the pins K, which pins ends of the bars M, which cross the door 0, i
and have a longitudinal slot formed through them to receive a lever, so that they can be turned to draw the screws L inward and firmly clamp the door 0 in place. With this construction the door 0 can be removed by removing the pins K, the screws L, and. the bars M.
In the inner part of the door 0 are formed flues I, which, when the door is closed, communicate with and form continuations of the ordinary flues J in the inner parts of the kilnwalls. With this construction the inner part of the door and the inner wall of the kiln will be heated uniformly, so that there will be no 0001 part of thekiln, and all the terracotta articles will be burned evenly.
The products of combustion from the furnaces A are introduced into the flues I of the door 0 through flues a in the same manner as they are introduced into the fines J in the inner wall of the kiln, so that the heat will be distributed evenly all around the kiln.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A door for terra-cotta kilns, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, made with flues I in its inner part, communicatin g with and forming continuations of the ordinary flues J in the kiln-wall, and connected with the furnaces by the flues 61., whereby a uniform distribution of heat all around the kiln will be effected, and the articles will be burned evenly, as set forth.
ALFRED HALL.
