OVEN AND FURNACE DOOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,235, dated February '7, 1882.

Application filed June 23, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. H. STRICKLER, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of lVestmoreland and Statcof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in "Oven and Furnace Doors; and l do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l is a front view of my improved furnace-door. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of one of the sections ofthe same.

.Corresl'ionding parts in the several gures are denoted by like letters of reference. i

This invention relates to doors for cokesmelting and other furnaces; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the front wall of the furnace, and B the door-opening ofthe same. G is the door-frame, and D D the doors, which are supported upon curved hinges, which enable them to close tightly against the sides of the door-frame.

The doors consist of cast-metal front plates E, and hacks F made of tire-brick,` which are secured to the metallic front plates by means of bolts G, the heads of which, H, are sunkin suitable recesses in the faces of the lire-brick and covered with lire-brick mud, which is afterthe front and back ot the door.

ward hardened by the heat to which it is exposed.

It will he seen that by this arrangement an empty space or airspace, l,is formed between Access to this space is had through several openings, J, in the front door casting, the air thus admitted escaping at the top into the furnace.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the. operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood. The fire-brick which formsthe inside ofthe doors is secured thereto by bolts, which are embedded therein, and thus protected from excessive heat. The air-space, through which a current of cold air constantly passes, preserves the door from excessive hea-t or from burning out, and the device is as convenientandaseasilymanipulated as furnace-doors now in use.

Having thus described my invention, [claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States f In afurnacedoor, the combination, with a. metallic front,ot' a tire-brick back bolted thereto, the said front and back being some distance apart, and the heads ofthe bolts embedded in the fire-brick, as described, for the pur pose set forth. l

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.

NVILLIAM HENRY STRIUKLER.
