ENOCH oHAsE, OF MILWAUKEE, WIsooNsIN.
BRICK OR OTHER KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,036, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed September 14, 1885. Serial No. 177,001. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOOH CHASE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Hilwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick and other Kilns; and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to brick and other kilns, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a kiln embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section on line as 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail.
A are the main walls of my kiln.
B are the combustion-chambers.
G are the jackets which surround the combustion-chambers, and are separated from the outer portion of the chambers by air-spaces a.
B are fines which lead from the open air into the spaces a.
b are openings leading from the spaces a into the combustion'chambers at their rear.
D are the smoke-passages which lead from the combustion-chambers into the kiln.
The air to feed combustion in the combustion-chambers is drawn in from beneath the grates E, and after the tire has been sufficiently started the vacuum created in the kiln proper by the heat causes a rush of air through the chamber spaces a, which joining with the smoke as it passes through the combustionchambers into thekiln proper vitalizes it and I prefer to bind the walls of my kiln by wooden uprights F, those in front passing through openings F between the combustionchambers, these openings being so large that the uprights will not come in contact with the masonry.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a kiln, a furnace surrounded by airspaces, in combination with openings leading from the open air into the air-spaces and other openings from the air-spaces into the rear of the furnace.
2. The combination of the chambers B, having air-spaces a, openings B and b, the latter opening into the rear ofthe furnace, and smokepassages D, with the kiln A, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WViscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
ENOGH CHASE.
