COMBINED MARKING PEN AND BRUSH.

SPEGIIEGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,089, dated July 13, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAUDE I. WALLIs, of Memphis, in the county of Pickens and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Conibined Marking Pen and Brush, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient pocket pen and brush for marking boxes, packages, 815C.

The invention consists of a tube or hollow handle containing an ink-reservoir, a brush at one end of the handle inclosed in an elastic thimble and in communication with the inkreservoir, and of a double'nibbed pen fixed in the opposite end of the handle from the brush.

Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the device with brush and pen in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the device closed. Fig; 3 is an enlarged plan of the pen.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, A represents the hollow handle or tube containing the ink-reservoir a. A smaller and short tube, 1), is inserted in one end of the tube A, and affords a passage for the flow of the ink from the reservoir a to the brush B, that is inserted in the end of said tube 1), and is held in place partly by the ends of the wire 0, that is wound about the brush, and partly by the elastic brush-covering O, that is drawn over the said brush B to hold it compactly together, and is secured upon the tube A, the free end of said elastic tubular covering 0 being cut oii' on a bevel or slope to admit of the easier application of the projectin g end of said brush B.

D is a tubular prolongation of the handle, closed at one end, screwing into the portion A at the end opposite from the brushB when the pen is in use, a rubber washer, (1, then serving to prevent the escape of ink at the joint formed by the two parts A D.

E is the pen-holder, holding the pen F and fitting into the open end of the prolongation D of the handle, so that the point of the said pen may be exposed for use, as shown in Fig. 1, or so that the said holder E may be reversed and the pen F entered into said part D for protection of its point.

The pen F is cut away on one face on the ordinary slope or bevel to a blunt point,while centrally on the back of the pen a pear-shaped opening, f, is made, the narrow part of which opening f extends straight through the point of the pen, thereby dividing said point into two nibs,g g, which nibs g, g are split with simple cuts h h, that diverge from the point of the pen upward and outward on lines nearly parallel with the edges of the bevel of the under side of the pen. The pen F has thus two split nibs separated from each other by a narrow opening, so that when used for marking said pen F will make two distinct parallel lines and the ink will flow most readily from the pen. This pen F is equally well adapted to ordinary writing, and maybe made with coarse or fine nibs, as desired, to suit the work to which it may be applied.

The brush B may be termed a fountainbrush, as the-ink for marking is constantly applied or in contact with it from the reservoir a.

The partial vacuum in the ink-reservoir a prevents the ink from running out or dropping from thence as the brush is used; but it permits the ink to flow to the brush with sufficient freedom for required use.

Then not in use the brush B and pen F may be reversed from their positions, as shown in Fig. 1, and the cap G be placed over the brush end of the device, so that the device may then be carried in the pocket with ease and safety.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, the combined marking pen and brush, substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the tubular handle A, containing an ink-reservoir, a, tube b, brush B, provided with elastic covering G, tube D, pen-holder E, and pen-F, as set forth.
