GILMAN VOODVARD AND FRANKLIN S. HATHAVAY, 0F KEENE, NE HAMPSHIRE.
SECURING GARMENTS TO HOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,996, dated February 15, 1859.
170 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GILMAN VooDwARD and F RANKLIN S. HATHAWAY, of Keene, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a useful Device for Securing Garments and other Textile Fabrics to Hooks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and `to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in se',- curing a hook to a sliding plate for the purpose of causing an arm to fall upon the head of the hook by means of a weight being suspended therefrom, or by other means forced downward and securing the same in its position, also in providing the arm and hook at theirl points of contact with spurs for the purpose of retaining any article of textile nature that may be secured therein.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
T he device herein described is intended to be secured in a vertical position by the back plate H1, as is shown by the different sections and elevations of the drawings. The hook B1 is secured at its base to the sliding plate C, C, which is fitted to the channel z' 2 in the back plate H1 and is secured thereto by the ears Z, Z, Z, Z,2 in a manner to allow its free upward and downward motion. rihe arm Fl is attached to the top of saidsliding plate by the pivot c. At the heel of said arm are the teeth fr, 11, which mesh into the cavities z', z' in the back plate H, by which means the arm F is actuated by the sliding plate C, C. The tumbler S2 is pivoted at m to the sliding plate C, C1 within its cell g2 at the base of the hook B1. The block Z1 is secured to the back plate Hl and projects forward into the tumbler-cell g2 occupying the groove u1, the arm F being elevated as shown in Fig. l. An article of suicient .weight suspended from the hook B will canse the arm F to descend upon the head of said hook, in which position Ait is secured by the tumbler S2 which falls under the block (Z, actuated by the spring t. The tumbler S is beveled at its head for the purpose of compensating in its securing points for the different thick-1 nesses that may be interposed between the head of the hook B1 and the point of the arni F. A garment or other article of a textile nature being thus interposed is prevented from being drawn therefrom by the means of the spurs cZ, ZJ, as shown in Fig. 3. The spur Z is secured within a slot atthe point of the arm Fl by the pivot c2 in a manner to allow the desired limit to its motion. The spur is secured in a similar manner at the head of the hook B1, the relative positions being such that their rear projections act in counter point. The article thus secured is relieved by passing the key jl upward through the key hole 0, in the base of the hook B till the wing a, strikes the projection o of the tumbler S2 when a partial turn of the key jl will force the tumbler S2 back to a vertical position, disengaging the head of the tumbler from the block (Z2. The hook B1 being relieved of its weight, the sliding plate is drawn upward by the spring e, by which means the arm F is elevated and the article upon thehook relieved. The key j being turned back and withdrawn leaves the tunibler S-- resting against the side of the block (Z1.
It will be seen by referring to the drawings and model that this device is not only intended to secure articles of a textile nature between the point of the arm and the head of the hook, but anyarticle that may be passed over the head of the hook and suspended lfrom the inner curve or otherwise embraced therein in form of a loop or ring.
l. Securing the hook B, to the vertical sliding plate C, C, in the manner and for the purposes described and set forth.
2. The manner of operating the arm F, in combination with the movement of the hook B, and sliding plate C, C.
