Description

'rmrrnn 'srafrns PATENT crimen.
J. T. SARGENT, OF CARLINVILLE, ILLINOIS.
WALLET-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 195875, dated April 6, 1858'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB T. SARGENT, of Oarlinville, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Contrivance, which may be termed a IVallet-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- I Figure 1, denotes a frontview of such fastener'. 3, an end view of it, the said figures also exhibiting` the manner in which it is to be attached to a piece of cloth or to a pocket of any article of wearing apparel.
The object of the aforesaid invention is to enable a pocket-book, purse, wallet, or otherl article of value to be attached to a pocket in such manner as to prevent it from being stolen or removed therefrom by a pickpocket.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a metallic plate A, and a spring catch B, having the form as shown in the drawings. The spring catch is fastened to the att-achment plate and projects beyond the same, a sufficient distance for the proper operation of the spring portion a, of the catch. Furthermore, the attachment plate is furnished with any suitable number of holes Z), I), b,
'(see Fig. 4, which is a rear view of the attachment plate) such holes enabling it to be fastened to the lower part of a pocket, the fastening being effected by means of buttons or rings, as shown at c, d, or by any other suitable means. The cloth of the pocket is shown at L. The spring catch has its spring a, formed with a bend or recess d', as shown in the drawings; and, furthermore, the said spring extends and laps underneath and lies in contact with another or stationary portion j, of the spring catch, which is raised above the attachment plate, as shown in Fig. 2, the arrangement of the spring and the part f, with respect to the attachment plate being particularly shown in Figs. 2, and 3.
For attaching a wallet or purse to the fas- Fig. 2, a side view of it, and Fig.
lthe wallet to the pocket.
tener, a ring or staple C, is employed, it being fastened to the purse or wallet so as to project therefrom as shown in Fig. 1, in which D, may be supposed to represent a wallet or a portion thereof. The object of making the spring of the catch with a bend or recess (l, as above described, is to enable the ring e, or staple C. Yof the wallet t0 be turned so as to bring the wallet flatwise or into the most convenient position to be carried in the pocket. For the purpose of attaching the wallet to the pocket, the ring of the purse is to be pressed upon the spring of the fastener so as to force the spring toward the fastening plate. This having been accomplished, the ring is'to be drawn between the spring and the part f, of the catch and beyond the spring, this serves to connect By turning the wallet over, so as to bring the ring into the recess or bend of the spring, the wallet will lie flat in the pocket and cannot be unfastened therefrom except by being turned over again in such manner as to depress the spring away from the part f'. A very little practice is necessary to enable a person, who may have the fastener attached to his pocket to readily attach to, or detach-the wallet from the pocket while the difficulty of its removal by a pickpocket will readily be observed.
I claim-c l. The combination of the spring catch and the attachment plate, the same constitut-ing a safety apparatus for the purpose described.
2. I also claim arranging the spring catch and attachment plate together as specified, and making the said catch with a bend or recess (Z, disposed with respectto the attachment plate in manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature.
JACOB T. SARG'ENT. I/Vitnesses:
C. A. ANDREWS, I. R. DRAPER.
