SHIELD TO PROTECT BREASTPINS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,212, dated June 24, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. PHILLIPS, of the city of Washington and District of Co lumbia, have invented a new and useful Improveinent for the Protection of Breas'tpins, Brooches, and other Articles of Jewelry Adapted to its Application; and I do hereby declare the following a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view and Fig. 2 a longitudinal Section through the center of the guard or protecting plate.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe its constructionand operation.
A plate of any desirable metal and form is So cut as to project at right angles to its surface one or more lugs or lips, c, a; said lips are perforated for the admission of the pin suiiiciently near'the surface of the plate that the thickness only of the linen or other material will intervene between the plate and the pin-the latter thus pressing close upon the cloth.
The linen or cloth may have slits suitably worked for the purpose, coresponding in size, number and distance with the lips on the plate. The latter is placed beneath the linen-its lips entering the respective slits, while t-he pin passing through the holes of the lips, is latched in the usual way.
'Ihe majority of pins will cover the edges of the lips, andthus the whole contrivance for the pins protection will be eectually concealed.
Some of the advantages of this arrangement I will now proceed to Specify: first, the prevention of the wear of the linen by the ever-recurring perforations of the pin; second, the preservation of the pin from bending or breaking at the joint; third, the security given to the latching by the guidance of the holes in the lips, lthereby preventing its working loose and being lost; fourth, its complete protection from abstraction and lastly its economical application to pins generally.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The employment o-f a shield or plate with one or more lips or lugs for the purposes above specified.
