Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMY IV. BLISS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT:
FASTENING FOR GARMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,416, dated June 2, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMY IV. Buss, of the city and county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful manufacture of Fastenings for Garments; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the fol lowing specification and drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my new manufacture of fastenings for garments, I will proceed to describe their construction and the mode of using them, referring to the drawings in which the same letters indicate like parts in each figure.
a, a, in the accompanying drawings, shows the metal plate made either plain or ornamental upon the outer surface, so as to suit the taste or fancy of the purchaser or wearer.
Z), 6, shows the pointed hooks, secured upon and near the ends of the plate, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Said hooks are made sufiiciently sharp, so that they will not break or tear the fibers of the cloth or garment, and may be soldered or riveted or otherwise fastened to the plate or bar.
This method of constructing said plates is far preferable for the purpose of securing the garment about the person, than those in common use. IVith pin secured atone end by a joint to the plate, and at the other (after passing through the garment) is secured in a catch; which almost always breaks after using a few times.
The method of using this hook plate is by taking hold thereof with the thumb and finger at each end and hook into one side of the garment or shawl then over onto the other side, after adjusting it in the manner desirable about the person. The hooks being made so pointed as that they will hold the garment about the person without injury to the garment and is more easily removed when desired. It will securely retain its place on the garment when not desired for use, by gathering the garment, and inserting the teeth and pulling the garment smooth.
I am aware that narrow flat hooks have been soldered on the plates used for belts and other purposes, hooking into holes, or eyes prepared for them. Also that wire pins have been secured on ornaments (having blunt ends,) so that by pricking holes through any article to which it is desirable, they shall be attached. The said pins may pass through and be fastened thereto by bending the pins down. All such arrangements I do not claim.
I believe I have described and represented my new fastening for garments, so as to enable any person skilled in the art to makeand use it. I will now state what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, to wit:
I claim the new manufacture of fastening for garments described, to wit, a plain or ornamental plate or bar, having sharp hooks permanently fastened to it, pointing toward each other or toward the center; so arranged as to be conveniently hooked into the garments to be fastened or unhooked therefrom.
JEREMY WV. BLISS.
