Claims.

My invention relates to a garment. It has to do, more particularly, with jackets. The jacket of my invention is particularly useful for surgeons and nurses. However, it is to be understood that my invention is applicable to all types of uniforms and other garments.

There is a need for a surgical jacket or nurses uniform of such a nature as to permit freedom of movement of the arms without binding of the jacket at the armpits and without tearing of the sleeves from the jacket at the armholes. Some attempts have been made to accomplish these results by employing elastic inserts adjacent the point where the sleeve is connected to the main part of the jacket. However, such prior art jackets have not been found very satisfactory because they do not permit sufficient movement without strain on the material of the jacket and because when the jackets are washed or cleaned, the elastic deteriorates and loses its elasticity. In fact, the elastic material will deteriorate quickly even though the jacket is not washed. Other attempts have been made to overcome these problems but have resulted in jackets which are of a complicated nature and expensive to make.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a garment construction wherein the sleeves are attached to the main part of the garment in such a manner that a person wearing such garment can freely move his arms without causing binding adjacent the armpits and without producing excessive strains on the garment resulting in tears or rips adjacent the points where the sleeves are attached to the main part of the garment.

Another object of my invention is to provide a garment construction of the type indicated which is of a very simple structure and will be inexpensive to make.

Another object of my invention is to provide a garment construction of the type indicated which is of such a nature that the parts thereof will not deteriorate readily even if the garment is washed or cleaned often.

The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein similar characters of references designate corresponding parts and wherein:

Figure 4 is a similar View showing the piece for attaching the left sleeve to the jacket.

Figure 5 is a plan view of a collar which may be used in the jacket.

Figure 6 and Figure 7 illustrate reinforcing pieces which may be used on the collar.

Figure 8 and Figure 9 illustrate reinforcing pieces which may be used on the upper edges of the front piece illustrated in Figure 2. v

Figure 10 illustrates a button which may be used in attaching the top edge of the front piece to the back piece of the jacket.

Figure 11 is a perspective view illustrating the completed jacket.

Figure 12 is a perspective view showing a person wearing the jacket.

Figure 13 is a perspective view illustrating the jacket with the top part of the front of the jacket detached and swung downwardly and-with the ends of the collar also being detached.

With reference to the drawings, in making my jacket, I provide the back I illustrated in Figure 1 and the front 2 illustrated in Figure 2, which are of the usual shape and which are similar to each other. I first dart the shoulders in the piece I and also dart along the hipline in the usual manner. Then, the pivot pieces 3 and. 4 are sewed to the back piece I in the manner illustrated best in Figure 13. This is accomplished by sewing the upper edges of the pivot pieces 3 and 4 to the back I at the shoulders along the lines 3a and 4a and at the underarm along the lines 3b and 4b. The rest of the pivot pieces remain unattached to the back.

The upper edge of the pivot piece 3 is reinforced with a piece of material 30 and the upper edge of the pivot piece 4 is reinforced with a piece of material 40, after which the pivot pieces have been attached to the back 1. Each of the pivot pieces has a pair of openings 5 formed therein at the point where the reinforcing pieces are sewed to the upper edge and such reinforcing pieces also have the openings formed therein.

The openings 5 are adapted to receive stems of buttons 6 which are held in place by clips I. The inner and upper corner of each of the pivot pieces 3 and 4 is provided with one part 8 of a snap fastener.

After the pivot pieces have been sewed to the back I, as indicated, the front 2 is sewed to the back I from a point at the lower end of these pieces up to the point where the armholes are tobe formed. The next step is to fasten each of the sleeves 9 and In to the garment. This is accomplished by sewing the inner end of sleeve 9 to the back I along the line So and to the pivot piece 3 along the line 91). The sleeve is not attached to the front piece 2. The sleeve is attached to the back and the pivot piece 4 in a similar manner. The edges of the front 2 are reinforced particularly at the neck and shoulders, as indicated at I I. Buttonholes 6a are formed in the shoulders of the front and portions 8a of snap fasteners are applied to the neck portion of the front.

A collar I3 is then sewed to the back I along the line M. The ends or front portions of the collar are free of the back as shown in Figure 13 and are reinforced with the pieces Ba and 13b at their inner edges. These pieces I30. and l3b carry portions 81) of snap fasteners.

Before the garment is worn, the parts, thereof will be in the conditions illustrated in Figure 13. It will be apparent that it will be easy to slip the garment over the head because of the large opening provided by swinging the front 2 downwardly as indicated in Figure 13. When the garment is put on, the front is swung upwardly and the shoulders of the front are buttoned to the shoulders of the back by the cooperating buttons 6 and buttonholes 6a. The two uppermost portions Ea of snap fasteners carried by the front will also cooperate with portions 8 of snap fasteners carried by the pivot pieces 3 and 4 to hold the front in place. Then, the ends of the collar I3 may be swung around and the fasteners 81) carried by the collar may be snapped on the other portions 811 of fasteners carried bythe front 2. The jacket will then have the appearance illuslustrated in Figures 11 and 12. It may be easily and quickly removed by loosening the front.

It will be apparent that since the sleeves are attached merely to the back of the jacket and the pivot pieces, freedom of movement of the sleeves relative to the back and front of the jacket will be permitted without danger of tears or rips. It

will also be apparent that my jacket is of such a such a nature that the parts thereof will not readily deteriorate even though the jacket is washed or cleaned often. Also, it will be apparent that my jacket is of simple construction and can be made at a relatively low cost.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A garment comprising a back portion and a front portion, a sleeve, a pivot piece between the back portion and front portion adapted to be disposed in front of the wearer being attached to the back portion only at the upper edge of the pivot piece and the under arm portion of the pivot piece and having the remainder of its edges free of the back portion and of the front portion, said sleeve having its inner end attached to the back portion and to the pivot piece only.

2. A garment comprising a body portion having an armhole formed therein, a pivot piece disposed within the body portion adjacent the armhole, said pivot piece being attached adjacent its upper and lower ends only to the body portion of the garment and having its inner and outer edges free of said body portion, said sleeve having a portion of its inner end attached to the body portion of the garment and having another portion of its inner end free of the body portion of the garment but attached to said pivot piece.

3; A jacket comprising a back portion and a front portion, a sleeve, a pivot piece between the back portion and front portion adjacent an armhole provided between said portions and adapted to be disposed infront of the wearer, said pivot piece being attached only at its upper edge and at itslower outer edge to the back portion and having the remainder of its edges free of the back portion and of the front portion, said sleeve having its inner end attached to the back portion and to the pivot piece only.

4. A jacket according to claim 3 wherein the lower ends of the front and back portions are stitched together to a point adjacent the armhole and wherein means is provided for detachably fastening the upper portion of the front. to the upper portion of the back.

5. A jacket according to claim 3 wherein the lower endsof the front and back portions are stitched together to a point adjacent the armhole, meansbeing provided for detachably fastening the upper portion of the front to the upper portion of the back, a collar stitched to the'back portion only, said collar being provided with fas-- tening meanscn-its forward free ends which cooperate with fastening means carried by the up-- pe-r'port'ion of the front.
