FOUNTAIN COMB Fil ed March 24,. 1942 Inventor Y J ormm EfieZZZBZ' Patented Sept. 15, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOUNTAIN COMB Norman R. Metzler, York, Pa. Application March 24, 1942, Serial No. 436,029
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements infountain combs adapted for use in applying a curling solution to the hair while the same is being combed and the invention has for its primary object to provide a sectional hollow handle for the comb to form a passage therein for the solution, the passage in the rear end of the handle being controlled by a check valve adapted to supply the handle with liquid and the passage at the front end of the comb also being provided with a check valve to control discharge of liquid therefrom and also to provide a rubber bulb for connecting the sections of the handle together and to control the opening and closing movement of the respective valves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in performance, neat and attractive in appearance and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which- Figure 1 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the connector for the sections of the handle.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the head of the comb having the teeth 6 projecting from one side thereof, the head having a passage I therein communicating with passages 8 in the respective teeth. The rear end of the head 5 is formed with a socket 9 within which is frictionally fitted a front handle section II] having a longitudinal passage II therein communicating with the passage I in the head. The passage II is formed with valve seat I2 against which aball valve I3 is positioned by means of a coil spring I4, the spring normally closing the passages against the flow of liquid forwardly into the head of the comb. The rear end of the passage II terminates in lateral passages I5 extending through the sides of the section III of the handle.
The rear section of the handle is designated at I6 and is likewise formed with a longitudinal passage I'I extending through its rear end and terminating at its front end in lateral passages I8 extending through the sides of thesection I6.
Threaded on the rear end of the section I6 is a tubular tip I9 of hollow construction having a restricted opening 20 in its rear end against which a ball valve 2I is seated and held in position by a coil spring 22 mounted in the tip and bearing against the rear end of the section I6 of the handle. Inwardly of the tip I9, the rear section I6 of the handle is provided with a sleeve 23. The adjacent ends of the handle sections I0 and I6 are rigidly connected by means of a rod 23 having its respective ends frictionally embedded in the adjacent ends of the handle sections and maintaining the same in spaced parallel relation, as shown to advantage in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The inner end of the handle section Ill is formed with a tapered portion 24 and the inner end of the handle section I6 is likewise formed with a tapered portion 25 adapted to frictionally receive the opposite ends of a rubber bulb 26 which forms a connection for the two sections of the handle, the lateral passages I5 and I8 communicating with the interior of the bulb.
In the operation of the device, when the bulb 26 is squeezed or contracted, the valve 2| will be maintained in its closed position and the valve I3 will be moved into an open position whereby to cause a discharge of the contents of liquid in the rubber bulb tobe forced through the teeth of the comb.
The rubber bulb 26 may be filled with a quantity of liquid by first contracting the same and then inserting the end of the handle into a container of liquid and upon releasing the bulb 26 to permit expansion thereof, the valve 2| will be opened, the valve [3 closed, and liquid from the container will be drawn into the passage I1 and into the bulb in a manner as will be apparent.
It is believed the details of construction, operation and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:
1. A fountain comb comprising a comb head having a passage therein, a sectional handle including a front section having a passage communicating with the passage of the head and extending through one side of the front section, and a rear section also having a passage extending through one side thereof, a rigid member connecting the sections of the handle, and a rubber bulb connected at its opposite ends to the sections of the handle and providing a reservoir in communication with the passages of each section.
2. A fountain comb comprising a comb head having a passage therein, a sectional handle including a front section having a passage communicating with the passage of the head and extending through one side of the front section, and a rear section also having a passage extending through one side thereof, a rigid member connecting the sections of the handle, and a rubber bulb connected at its opposite ends to the sections of the handle and providing a reservoir in communication with the passages of each section, and check valves in each of the. passages.
3. A fountain comb comprising a comb head having a passage therein, asectional handle ini cluding a front section having a passage communicating with the passage of the head and extending through one side of the front section, and a rear section also having a passage extending through one side thereof, a rigid member connecting the sections of the handle, and a rubber bulb connected at its opposite ends to the sections of the handle and providing a reservoir in communication with the passages of each section, and check valves in each of the passages, said check valves being arranged for opposite opening and closing movement by expansion and contraction of the bulb.
4. A fountain comb head having a passage therein, a sectional handle including a front section having a passage communicating with the passage of the head and extending through one side of the front section, and a rear section also having a passage extending through one side thereof, a rigid member connecting the sections of the handle, and a rubber bulb connected at its opposite ends to the sections of the handle and providing a reservoir in communication with
