Application filed March 17, `195.26. Serial No. 95,376. i
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in fountain combs and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eiiicient in use and economical in manufacture. A
In accordance with one object of the invention I .provide a comb wherein the handle of the comb is adapted to accommodate a hair or skull tonic which is adapted to be expelled through the teeth of the comb upon the skull and over and between the hair.
It is common that when one, in treating the hair or skull, uses the fingers of the hand for working in the tonic, a large portion of the tonic finds lodgment on the sides of the fmgersvabove and around the nger tips and due to this fact a large portion of the tonic is wasted. Therefore it is one of the many objects of the invention to provide a comb whereby the hair or skull tonic can be applied to the head directly from the comb without coming into contact with the lingers.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention illustrating the preferred form of construction.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
llig. 3 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
To accomplish the various objects of the invention I provide a comb includinoV a handle 10 providing a barrel 11 cylindrical in shape and provided with a reduced end portion 12 threaded externally as at 13. The opposite end portion of the handle or barrel is threaded as at 14 to receive avremovable cap 15 having a central opening 16 formed therein.
vWorking in this barrel is a plunger 17. This plunger 17 includes a shank 18 threaded at one end as at19 to receive a pist-.on 20. The exterior end portion 21 of the shank defines a finger gripping portion or handle 22 facilitating operation of the piston in the .barrel for reasons hereinafter understood.`
The ycomb further includes a body 23 eX- tending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the barreland defining a chamber 24. This body 23'includes a lateral eXtension 25 having` a passage 26 formed therein and threaded as at 13 for threaded relation with the reduced end portion 12. Thisv reduced end portion 12 has a passage 27 formed therein which opens communication between the chamber 24 and the barrel 11 at one side of the piston 20. Formed as an integral part of the body 23 and extending substantially at right angles with respect to the barrel 11 and laterally from the body 23 are a plurality of downwardly tapered teeth 28. Each of these teeth defines a tapered passage 29 communicating with the chamber 24.
In use, to fill the barrel With a hair or skull tonic, in liquid formation, the teeth 28 are submerged in the liquid tonic and the plunger drawn back to create a suction within the barrel to draw the liquid tonic through the passages of the teeth 28 into the chamber 24 and from there into the barrel at one side of the piston. been accomplished the comb is held in a convenient manner in the hand and as the teeth of the comb are worked over the skull the plunger is gradually depressed to expel the liquid tonic through the orifices 30 of the passages and into contact with the skull and over and between the hair.
After this has In the event a pasty composition is used instead of a liquid tonic, to fill the barrel with this pasty composition the cap 15 and plunger 17 are removed and the composition is then fed through this open end into the barrel. After the barrel has been filled to full capacity the plunger and cap are repositioned and by gradually depressing the plunger the composition will be expelled through the orifices of the passages 29.
From the foregoing description it is manifest that I provide a simple combination and arrangement of parts for applying a hair tonic, either in liquid or pasty form, to the lkull to be worked over and between the air.
Vh ile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it is to 'be understood that various changes and alterations may be carried out in manufacture without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim,
The invention having been set forth, what I claim as new and useful is:
In a device of the class described including a body deining a chambera teeth formed integral with said body and depending laterally therefrom deining tapered passages in communication with said chamber, a handle comprising a barrel and having a reduced end portion externally threaded for threaded engagement with said body and provided internally with passage communication between said barrel and chamber, substantially as shown, said handle extending at lateral right angles to the body intermediate the extremeties thereof7 means comprising a pis ton and plunger snugly slidable lengthwise insaid barrei, and oppositely disposed cup washers comprising said piston.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature.
ALBrN H. JoHNSON.
