RECORD DEVICE Filed March 5, 1941 Patented Aug. 25, 1942 UNITED STATES OFFICE RECORD DEVICE Elmer B. Klein, St. Louis, Mo.
Application March 5, 1941, Serial No. 381,784
(Cl. L29-16) 7 Claims.
This invention relates to record devices; and has special reference to holders for record cards adapted for engagement with the cards in a novel and convenient manner.
Objects of the invention are to provide an improved holder for a specially designed record card or sheet; to provide means for detachably connecting the holders to form a longitudinal series thereof; and to provide record cards or sheets having physical elements or parts adapted to engage the respective holders for suspension thereby and also in a manner to prevent disarrangement of the cards or sheets relative to themselves or to the holders.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved holder for a record card or sheet having a supporting portion for engagement with said card or sheet and retaining portions for engaging the upper edge of the card or sheet laterally from the supporting portion in order to hold the card or sheet in proper relationship and prevent displacement thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved record card or sheet adapted for detachable engagement with the holderso that the cards or sheets may be connected with the holder, and removed therefrom for ling or other purposes, in order to meet business requirements or conveniences.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing illustrating a suitable embodiment of the invention and in which- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a series of record cards or sheets attached to connected holders, parts of the cards being broken away to show the holders therefor and also todisclose clearly the manner in which the cards are attached to the holders.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing two series of card or sheet holders and record cards or sheets attached thereto supported in back-to-back relationship by a single supporting member.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a holder made in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 4 is an elevation or plan view of a portion of a record card or sheet having a slot specially provided therein for engagement with the holder, and a hinge device spaced from said slot permitting the card or sheet to be folded or turned over to expose the next subjacent card or sheet.
Each card holder is preferably composed of a section of sheet metal or the like formed to provide a flat body portion l, a forwardly curved and upwardly extended hook 2 at the middle of 55 the lower edge of the body portion, a slot 3 along the upper margin of the body portion parallel with the hook 2 and at least as long as said hook, and a forwardly and downwardly turned hook 4 at each end of the body. A series of these hangers may be linked together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by engaging the hooks 2 in the slots 3 of the respective card holders to provide a pivotally connected series or chain of the holders.
Each record card or sheet 5 is of the size desired and is formed with a slot 6 near and parallel with its upper edge. The slot 6 in each card or sheet 5 is arranged at such a distance from the upper edge thereof that, when the slot 6 is engaged with the hook 2, thev upper edgel of the card will engage rather closely within and against the hooks 4, thereby positively preventing accidental detachment of the respective cards from the holders to which they areV attached, and also preventing substantial displacement thereof. Each card is also formed with a longitudinal hinge 1 below and parallel with the slot 6 and the upper edge of the card, so that each card may be turned upwardly or backwardly about said hinge to expose the next subjacent card for the purpose of inspection or for the purpose of receiving additional records.
These hangers may be connected together in continuing series to any extent or length desired and may be detached optionally. When the hangers are connected in extended series, each record card or sheet is attached to the hook 2 in front of the next lower hanger engaged with said hook.
As shown in Fig. 2, two series of holders or hangers may be suspended by a single device 8 provided with eppositely disposed and upwardly extended hooks 9 for engagement in the slots 3 of the uppermost hangers of the two series. The device 8 may also be formed with a hole to receive a supporting rod Il) along which said device may be moved so that any desired number of longitudinal series of record cards or sheets.
and hangers therefor may be suspended from the same rod.
A V-shaped connector I l may be engaged with the hooks 2 of the lowest card holders or hangers of the two series thereof that are suspended back-to-back from the same device 8. The connector Il will hold the lower ends of the two series of hangers or holders close toeach other while the upper ends thereof are held close to each other by the device 8 which suspends them.
From the foregoing it is apparent that this invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes quite efciently and economically. The hangers are readily interchangeable, as are the record cards or sheets, so that no inconvenience is encountered in reassembling them after they have been detached. The specific form, construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied within equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
