FILING CABINET FOR DRAWINGS, PLANS, AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 6, 1938 Patented June 25, 1940 i l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Karl Mbus, Berlin, Germany Application vAugust 6, 1938, Serial No. 223,385 In Germany August 9, 1937 1 1 claims. (ci. is-z) This invention relates to cabinets in which of the suspension elements also facilitates the drawings, plans or the like are led or stored in transfer of drawings from the Stringing pinsv to a hanging or upright position the cabinet having the suspension elements and the introduction of tiltable front and top members, while on the inthe Stringing pins into said elements when clos- 5 side of the back of the cabinet elements are ing the cabinet, thus also in this case ensuring 5 provided on which the drawings or plans are suscareful handling of the drawings. pended and into which Stringing or threading An embodiment of the invention is illustrated pins attached to the inside of the front wall of by way of example in the drawing, in which: the cabinet slide telescopically. Figure l is a plan view of the cabinet with the 10 In a known cabinet of this type for ling top removed and the front open. 1 drawings, plans or the like the drawings are Figure 2 is an elevational Section on the line suspended by means of rings attached thereto A-B in Figure 1, the top beingshown in closed upon ridged, hollowed metal sleeves attached to pOSitiOn. the rear wall of the cabinet, While when the Figure 3 iS a Section 0n line C-D 4in Figure 1 1| cabinet is being closed curved pins attached to Showing on an enlarged scale a detail of the il the front wall of the cabinet engage with the attachment 0f a Stringing Din. said sleeves, the latter being slotted on the under- Figure 4 illustrates to a larger scale a fragment face. The aforesaid formed with a slot, are attached to the rear wall stops for limiting the degree of'movement of the 3a for the suspension tubes 6, while similar suspension elements and Stringing pins are prefslotted abutment plates i5 are attached to the 5 erably so adjusted that both the pins and the susfront wall 3 of the cabinet Ifor the Stringing pins, y pension elements tend to move downwardly when said tubes and pins passing through the slots in the cabinet is being openedlthereby facilitating 'the said plates. free ends of both the stringing pins and the suspension tubes tend to move downwardly, thereby considerably facilitating the removal of a drawing and contributing to careful handling of all the drawings, which on the front of the cabinet being opened automatically loosen and separate from one another owing to the inclined position of the suspension elements.
For the purpose of facilitating the Stringing of the drawings or plans to be filed onto the suspension tubes, the latter are bevelled at their free ends, while the free ends of the Stringing pins are rounded, so as to ensure easy introduction of said pins into the suspension tubes 6.
In order to enable the front wall 3 of the cabinet to be arrested in several different positions,
for example, two, stop means are arranged on both sides of the cabinet. These stop means consist of two locating rails 9 articulated one at either side of the tiltable front wall 3, each of said rails being at its free end provided with a bent lug l2 and, at a certain distance inwardly therefrom, with a notch I0. These locating rails cooperate with guide members I I attached to the inner faces of the side walls in such manner that the front can be arrested in two positions, one
' being that in which the notches I0 in the locating rails co-operate with the guide members Il, and the other being that in which the bent lugs I2 of the locating rails 9 abut against the guide members Il to hold the front wall 3 firmly. In the latter position of the front Wall 3 the Stringing pins 5 are out of engagement with the suspension tubes G, so that a space is provided between the free ends of said tubes and pins for the insertion or removal of the drawings.
Alternatively, other locating means such, for example, as simple chains may beused.
The drawings or plans I1 (Figure 4) to be filed in the cabinet may be provided with a suitable reinforcement which prevents the perforations therein being torn, being preferably attached to a strip I8 provided with perforations, `which strip is composed of somewhat stii paper or similar material. The suspension tubes and the stringing pins engage said perforations of the said suspending strip. The plans are preferably attached to the suspending strip by means of a strip provided with an adhesive. The suspending strips I8 prevent damage to the perforations in the drawings and need not be removed until the drawings are required for the preparation of prints by means, for example, of mechanical copying apparatus.
The suspending strips I8 may if desired be provided with any desired legend for the purpose of facilitating easy and orderly filing of the plans.
Upon the inner face of the top i there is preferably arranged a table of contents (not shown) which gives a ready review of all the drawings and plans filed in the cabinet, so that any drawing 'and its serial number can at once be found.
