Description

`June 30, 1942. M. COHEN 2,288,071
GARMENT SEPARATOR WITH SIZE INDICATOR Filed Deo. 17', 1940 Patented June 30, 1942 UNETED GARMENT sEPARAToR Wrrn SIZE INDICATOR 2 Claims.
My invention relates to garment separators.
An important object of the invention is to provide devices of the above-mentioned character which are adapted to be hung from a pole or the like with garment hangers and will serve to divide the hanged garments into size groups and indicating the size of the garments in the adjacent groups.
A further object of the invention is to provide a garment separator, the upper portion of which corresponds generally to the contour of the upper portion of the garment supported upon the hanger so that the upper portion of the separator does not project beyond the adjacent portions of the garment, to any considerable eX- tent, which might result in the separator being broken or injured and also inconvenience the sales person in the handling of the garments.
A further object of the invention is to provide a separator having a, suspension element provided with a holder for a card or sign indicating the size or the like of the garment, the arrangement being such that the holder will retain the card or the like in the upright position above the pole or support when the separator is in position and suspended from the pole or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a separator of the above-mentioned character, the suspending element of which may be folded downwardlT or collapsed when the separator is not in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is a perspective View of garment separators embodying my invention, showing the same arranged between size groups of garments,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the separator, parts broken away,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the upper end of the separator, parts broken away, with the suspension element and associated elements elevated, and,
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a show' case or cabinet of conventional construction, frequently used in stores. Within this show case, near its top is a horizontal supporting element or by means of usual garment hangers 8. These garments may be jdresses 'for ladies, children, or misses, or even garments for men or boys. My improved separators are designated by the numeral 9, the same being arranged at spaced intervals between the suspended garments to divide the same into size groups. Each separator comprises a light stiff body portion iiLpreferably formed of horizontal corrugated cardboard, having its edges covered by a binding or tape II secured thereto by any suitable means. The binding may be sewed to the body portion or attached thereto by cement'or the like. The lower end of the body portion lil is rounded at its corners as shown at I2. Near its upper end, the body portion l0 is cut away or reduced for providing curved or cut away shoulder portions I3, corresponding generally to the contour of the garment hangers, so that the shoulder portions I3 will not extend outwardly or upwardly beyond the upper portion of the garment supported on the hanger. The shoulder portions I3 are continued upwardly in a reduced neck I4 which is arranged well inwardly of the outer ends of the shoulder portions I3. The top of the neck is horizontal and has a strip I6 arranged thereon. This strip is preferably U-shaped in cross-section to receive the upper end of the neck and constitutes a binding for this upper end. The strip I6 is secured to the upper end of the neck by eyelets or rivets I6'.
A suspension element is provided in the form of a hook Il having a shank I8, which is pivotally connected'with the binding strip I6 by a rivet I9 or the like. The crown 26 of the hook I'I is provided with a cylindrical opening 2l, to rotatably receive a reduced cylindrical extension 22 of a shank 23. The reduced cylindrical extension 22 extends below or upon the inner side of the crown 20 and has its free end spread or flattened, as shown at 24. The shank 23 is therefore rotatably mounted upon the hook I'I, but the head 24 will rest upon or engage with the pole 6, and having frictional engagement therewith, will prevent the shank 23 rotating too freely, so that the shank will remain in a selected position when turned to the same. The shank is provided with a sign or card holder 25, which may be in the form of a plurality of turns of a resilient coil, the ends of which are continued in arms 26, secured to the upper end of the shank 23. Numeral 2l is a card or sign equipped with characters, such as numerals, designated at 28, indicating the size of the garment. While it is preferred that the cylindrical extension 22 and the head 24 be provided, I also contemplate having the extension 22 screw-threaded into the opening 2 I.
In the use of the separators, a separator is arranged between the adjacent size groups of the garments. The hook I1 is raised to the upstanding position and placed upon the pole 6 and this hook is now substantially vertical and the separator 9 is suspended from the same. When the hook I1 is swung to the vertical position, the shank 23 carried by the crown of the hook is disposed in a vertical raised position above the pole 6. The card 21 is now inserted in the holder 25 and the shank 23 is turned upon its longitudinal axis so that the card will assume the correct angular position. Since the head 24 of the extension 22 rests upon the pole 6 there is sufficient frictional engagement so that the shank 23 will not then turn freely whereby the card 21 will be held in the selected adjusted position without liability of accidental displacement. The cards carrying the designations indicate the sizes of the garments in the different groups. When the separator is not in use it is removed from the pole 6, and the shank 23 may be turned upon its longitudinal axis so that the card 21 may be arranged in a plane parallel with the plane of the body portion IU, whereby the hook, holder, and card may all be swung down upon the face of the body portion and below the elevation of the top of the neck I4, as indicated in Figure 2.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A garment separator comprising a body portion, a hook secured to the body portion to suspend the same from a pole and thereby arranged upon the pole, said hook being provided in its crown with an opening, a shank having an eXtension rotatably mounted within the opening of the crown and projecting beyond the opening so that the extension engages with the pole or the like when the hook is arranged upon the pole, and means carried by the shank for holding a card or the like.
2. A garment separator comprising a body portion, a suspension hook having its shank pivotally connected to the upper portion of said body, said hook having its crown portion adapted to be suspended from a pole, and a card holding device including a shank portion rotatably secured at its lower end to the crown portion of the hook, whereby the card holding device will be exposed to View above the pole and capable of disposing a card held in the device either in longitudinal alinement with the pole or at an angle thereto when the hook is engaged over the pole, said suspension hook and card holding device adapted to lie flat against the body portion of the separator when the hook is disengaged from the pole and the separator is not in use.
