H. D. STILES.
Head Rest.
No. 229,062. Patented June 221880.
Nv PETERS. Puomumcamanm WASP; NGTDN n C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
HERBERT D. STILES, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JOSHUA GREGG, OF SAME PLACE.
H EAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,C62, dated June' 22, 1880.
Application filed (Ianuary 19, 1880. I
the head of a passenger who may desire to lie on a car-seat; second, to afford facilities for the proper adjustment of the head-rest either up or down, and to hold the rest in position on either of the reversible arms of a car-seat. I attain these objects by the mechanism i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- apparatus, showing the manner in which it is attached to the reversible metallic arm of a car-seat. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. 2 5 Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the rigid wooden arm of a carseat, having attached thereto the metallic reversible arm B for the seat-back, all of which 0 is of any ordinary form of construction.
0 O D represent a metallic clamp-block of peculiar construction, as follows, to wit: The front is provided with two slides, E E, one on each side, and extending from the bottom to 3 5 the top, in which a spring-bar is fitted and made fast at any desired height by the screw F, as shown in Fig. 2. At the rear side of the block is a recess formed between the thin plate D and the front part, O, in which the metallic 4.0 arm B of the car-seat fits, the thin plateD bein g inserted between said metallic arm and the wooden arm A, as shown in Fig. 1, and secured at any desired position on the arm B by the binding-screw F.
The spring also is of peculiar form, to wit: An edge view is similar to that shown in Fig. 1. The part G, being straight and provided with holes P P P, operates in the slides E E of the clamp-block, and may be adjusted up or down by inserting the binding-screw F in Figure 1 is an end elevation of the entire any desired one of the holes P. The upper part of the spring G is bent in front, as at H, thenback with a larger bend, J, at the rear, the upper end, K, being carried forward nearly horizontally, as shown, thus forming a very flexible spring.
The head-restO may be of any desired form or finish, having a wooden base, N, on which is firmly secured the slide'plate M and slide L.
In the slide L the horizontal part K of the spring fits, as shown in Fig. 1.
The whole apparatus, constructed as described, when set up ready for use, is like that shown in the drawings.
The clam p-block O O D, with the spring and head rest, may be attached to either one of the metallic arms of a car-seatt. a, the arm next to the aisle or the arm next to the side of the car, thus enablingthe passenger who uses it to lie on the seat with his head toward the aisle or toward the side of the car, as he may desire.
The device may be easily detached from the seat-arm and the head-rest removed from the spring, so as to pack snugly in a valise for transportation.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an ad justable portable spring head-rest device consisting of the clamp-block O O D, the adjustable spring G K, provided with perforations P, the head-rest O, slide L, and binding-screw F operating against the seat-arm, all substantially as described.
2. The clamp-block O G D, having the vertical slide-guides E E in front, and provided with a recess to receive the metallic arm of the seat between the plate D and part 0, combined with the spring or perforated bar G K, 0 binding-screw F, operating against the seat arm, and the reversible metallic seat-arm B of a car-seat, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 5 two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT D. STILES.
