Description

C. GURNBY. i HEAD AND BACK REST.
No. @7.311. Patented. May 6, 1890.

CHARLES GURNEY, OF PIFFARD, NEW YORK.
HEAD AND BACK REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,311, dated May 6, 1890.
Application led October 12, 1889.
To all whom. it 11i/Cty concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GURNEY, of Piffard, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Head and Back Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a portable back and head rest, and it is applicable for use in chair, but is designed more especially for use in connection with a railway-car seat, the object of the invention being to provide for compact folding of the parts employed to make the head and back rest, and at the same time to provide for the adjustment of the said parts, so that they may be brought to fit the person of almost any user.
Reference is to be'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of the improved back and head rest, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a..central sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View on the line y y of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, 10 represents a case, in the back of which there is a slot or opening 11, the forward portion of the case being upholstered, as shown at 12. To the back of the case 10 there are secured two forwardly-extending grooved strips 13, two grooves being formed in each of the said strips. In the rear grooves of each strip there is mounted a plate 14, near the upper end of which there is hinged an arm or support 15,which arm or support maybe moved to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3, and folded down in the direction indicated by dotted lines in the said figure. In the forward grooves of the strips 13, I mount a standard 16, which may be moved upward or downward and held in the position to which it may be adjusted by a set or binding screw 17. The standard 16 carries a U-shaped spring 18, and this spring in turn carries ahead-rest 19, the head-rest being adj usted to such an angle as may be required by means of adj usting-screws 20, that pass through the body of the spring 18. To the lowerforward edge of the case 10, I hinge a case Serial No. 326,842. (No model.)
21, the forward face of which is upholstered, and within this case 21,1 iitl transverse strips 22, 22, and 22h, said strips being undercut and serving as guides for projections 23 and 23, said projections being carried by wings 24, that normally rest as represented in full lines in Fig. 1, but which may be drawn outward to the position indicated by dotted lines in said figure and in Fig. 5.
In use the several parts of my improved back and head rest are adjusted as represented in the drawings, a proper adjustment to the particular form of the person using the head-rest being obtained by moving out the wings 24 and by adjusting the head-rest to a proper position; but when it is desired to transport or carry the rest the arm 15 is folded down, the lower case 21 is folded up to the position indicated by dotted line in Fig. 3, and the standardV 16 is removed and placed along the back of the case 10. When the rest is used, the arm 15 is passed over the top of the back of the seat occupied by the user, and being so adjusted a yielding motion is imparted to the rest through the medium of a spring 25, that is connected to the lower end of the strip 14and to the casing 10, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a head and back rest, thecombination, with a casing having an opening in its back, of a spring pressed plate mounted in the casing and an arm hinged to the said plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an upper casing, of a lower casing hinged thereto, a standard adjustably held within the upper casing, a spring carried by the standard, a head-rest carried by the spring, a strip mounted within the upper casing, a spring arranged in connection with the strip, and an arm hinged to the strip and arranged to extend to therear from the casing.
3. In a head and baci; rest, the combination, with a casing provided with guideways, of wings provided with projections extending at right angles thereto and sliding in the said guideways, the said wings resting normally against the casing, substantially as herein shown and described.
4; In a head and back rest, the combinaranged under the lower end of the plate or strip, an arm hinged to the upper end of the plate or strip, 2L lower easing hinged to the upper easing, and extensible wings carried by I 5 the lower casing, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES GURNEY.
