Description
E. SIMON. Satohels,'Ba,g.a,nd Valise;

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD SIMON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SATCHE'L, BAG, AND VALISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,056, dated June 22, 1880.
Application filed December 17, 1879,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SIMON, of Newark, State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements on'satchels, Bags, or Valises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to satchels, hand-bags,
and valises, naming bags as representative articles, for the improvement applies equally Well to all; and it consists in strengthening the bag, and also in economizing material, by means of an auxiliary strip in the bottom on the outside, in combination with a strip heretofore used on the inside.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section,and Fig.2 is a cross-section on line as a: on Fig. 1.
My improvement consists in adding a strip, plate, or wire,I, in the bottom of a bag, eX- tending along the center, on the outside of the bag and on a line with a similar piece, K, hitherto used on the inside of the bag. These inside strips alone prove insufficieht for the tax and wear of the bag, as the material of which it is made, united with these strips, is very liable,vfrom the pressure within, to be torn loose, and the strips become almost useless, and the bag also. My two strips are united together by riveting or otherwise, and no pressure from within can separate them; and the strips I may have the ends connected with the frame L, or the ends may only approach to the frame.
In the use of the double strips I am enabled to make the outside of my bag in two pieces, making a lap of the edges between the strips, and in this way I work into my bags pieces half the size of those formerly required, and at a great saving of expense, besides making a much stronger bag with the double strips, and it is much more convenient to work the bag in sections, which the lap in the bottom of the bag enables meto do.
I claim As an improvement in satchels, bags, or valises, the auxiliary rod or strip K, in combination with the rod or strip I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
EDWARD SIMON.
