Description

Aug. 16 1927.
M. G.'SCHEUER BAG LIKE IRECEPTACLE Filed Jan. 8, 1927 hy/avzww a flbtmq I Patented Aug. 16, 1927.
UNITED STA MAX G. SCHEUER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAGLIKE RECEPTACLE.
Application filed January 8, 1927. Serial No. 159,791.
This invention relates to improvements in bag-like receptacles, such, for example, as portfolios, brief cases, &c. for the carrying of papers and other small articles.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a receptacle of this kind which will be simple in construction, which will be easy to manufacture within reasonable limits as to cost, and which will at the same time stand long continued use without substantial wear or loss in appearance.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 is a perspective view'of a receptacle of the brief case type embodying the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawing, the bag shown therein is made of artificial leather, commonly called leatheroid and like the usual brief case or portfolio has front and rear sides 1, 2, a central partition 3, dividing the bag into two compartments, and ends 4t and bottom 5 connected with the sides 1, 2 and partition 3; these ends and the bottom being collapsible so that the bag will be comparatively fiat when empty and will be distended when filled or partly filled with papers &c.
The bag is also provided with a covering flap 6 connected or integral with the rear side 2, with its free end overlaying the otherwise open top of the bag and passing downwardly along and overlapping the front 1 of the bag.
This covering flap has a longitudinal slit or opening 7 in its free end and the front side 1 of the bag has secured to it a downwardly projecting holding flap 8 adapted to pass through this opening. The free end of this holding flap 8 and the front side 1 are provided with two interengageable members 9, 10 of asecuring means for securing the holding flap to the body of the bag when desired; the securing means shown being a lock of ordinary, well known construction.
The holding flap 8 is secured to the front 1 at the point- 11 so that its inner or secured end will be directly over the lower edge 12 of the opening 7. The weight or strain of the bags contents, when the bag is distended by such contents or is being carried by a handle, as 13, will be borne by the holding flap 8 and front side 1 of the bag, instead of by the lock 9, 10 and side 1. The opening 7, and holding flap 8, are of substantial length so that they present long bearing surfaces to each other for sustaining this weight or strain. Because of this also, the weight or strain is distributed a substantial distance along the front side 1 with the result that'any tendency to pull the front side out of shape is successfully resisted.
What I claim is:
I 1. A bag comprising front and rear sides, intermediate collapsible body and end portions and a covering flap extending from the rear side over the top and downwardly along the front side of the bag,.said cov.er ing flap being provided with an opening and said front side having secured to it a holding flap adapted to be introduced into and extend through said opening and over the front side of the bag, and releasable 'interengaging members on the holding flap and front side of the bag for temporarily securing the two together.
2. A bag comprising frontand rear sides, intermediate collapsible body and end portions and a covering flap extending from the rear side over the top and downwardly along the front side of the bag, said coverinv flap being provided with an opening an said front side having secured to it a holding flap adapted to be introduced into and extend through said opening and over the front side of the bag, and releasible interengaging members on the holding flap and front side of the bag for temporarily securing the two together, the lower edge of the opening in the covering flap being so arranged relative 1y to the holding fla that when the bag is in use the holding flEip will be engaged by and the strain of the bags contents be borne by the holding flap.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
MAX G. SCHEUER.
