lJNiTED STATES .PATENT OFFIC CHARLES T. BRANDON, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR'TO O. T. BRANDON 8U OO., OF SAME PLACE.
WASH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,027, dated Tune 22, 1880.
n Application led December 8, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concer/n.:
Beit known that I, CHARLES T. BRANDON, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wash- Boards, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description, like letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in each ligure.
My invention relates to improvements in the metallic ,rubbing-face of wash-boards, by which the efficiency of the board is increased.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan of a wash-board provided with my improved rubbing-face, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line a b. Fig. 3 is a section on the line c d, and Fig. 4 a section on the line ef.
A is the metallic rubbing-face, constructed of sheet-zinc or any other suitable material, on which a series of projections7 B, are raised by rollin g or pressing. These projections are ar ranged in columns O, and a channel, D, extending from the top to the bottom ot' the rubbing-face, is provided between each row of columns, forming a dividing-line between the projections anda channel tor the water and dirt to pass from the board. The projections in each column are arranged to break joint, or, in other words, the projections in one column are placed opposite to the recesses in the adjoining columns, and the upper face of each projection is made more abrupt than the lower face, the ends of the projections being rounded from the channels upward. This arrangement of the projections produces a bold rubbing-face, and also allows the water and dirt to escape freely from the board, as the bottoms of the recesses between the projections and the channels D are on the same level.
In operation, when the clothes are rubbed on the board the water and dirt are expressed, and, by means of the channels D, removed at once from the board.
In the usual construction of rubbin g-faces the dirty water cannot freely run oft', a portion being retained in the recesses of the rubbing-face and alternately expressed and absorbed by the clothes, thus materially retarding the operation of cleansing the clothes.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a wash-board having a metallic rubbing-face provided with raised projections placed in columns lengthwise of the face, said columns being distinctly separated by straight parallel channels, which are sunk to a uniform depth throughout their length with the bottom of the depressions in the rubbing-face, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
