" IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,319, dated August 5, 1879; application filed May 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER E. RUDEL, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this specification.
This invention relates to wash-boards and it consists in an improved construction of the rubbing-plate for the same, as will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawing, which represents a plan view of my invention.
The zinc rubbing-plate which forms the sub ject of -my invention is provided with transverse rows of oblique, straight, and parallel projections or corrugations, angular in crosssection, but straight, or nearly so, in longitudinal section. The alternate rows of these projections are right and left handed, or run in right and left hand directions, and each row is so disposed in relation to the one below that each projection therein shall point toward the center, or nearly so, of the corresponding projection in the next lower row, as clearly represented in the drawing, where the alternate projections are denoted, respectively, by A and B.
By this construction Iobtain, in washing, a zigzag motion of the clothes, which are guided,
say, by the right hand projections down against the left hand ones in the row below, which again guide them back toward the righthand ones in the next row, thus thoroughly rubbing and cleansing the clothes.
It will also be observed that there is no place for the water or dirt to accumulate, because it is guided in a zigzag course down the board and back into the tub.
I am aware that wash-boards having serpentine or waving corrugations, either plain or broken by secondary zigzag corrugations, are old 5 but in such the dirt and water accumulate at the bends or angles of the corrugations, while by my improved construction this is impossible.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A wash-board rubbing-plate provided with alternate right and left hand rows of oblique, straight, and parallel projections or corrugations, so disposed that each projection shall point toward the central portion, or nearly so, of the corresponding one in the row below, substantially as herein described, for the pur pose set forth.
