WASHING- SPEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,278, dated March 9, 1880.

MACHINE.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAAS. of Lyndon, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section; andFigs. 4 and 5 are detail views, in perspective, of the rocker, with its rest, upon which the machine is operated.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to oscillating washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter I more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, A A are the side pieces of the bed or standard upon which the machine is mounted, which are united by cross-pieces a a, and provided upon their innersides, facing each other, with grooved ways 12 b.

The suds box or receptacle consists of parallel sides B B, elliptic in shape, upon the outside faces of which are secured semicircular grooved rockers O, the flanges c of which fit into the grooved ways I) b of the bed A A.

The top, sides, and bottom of the suds-box are formed by a single sheet of zinc, B, one end of which is clamped between two crosspieces, D d, bent around the side pieces, B B, and up upon the opposite side, 'where it is nailed upon the wringer-board E, opposite to and parallel with the cross-pieces D d. In the bottom of the box thus formed is placed a series of cross-pieces or ribs, 6 e e, reaching from side to side.

In the extreme ends of the elliptic or oval box B are placed transverse slats or bars f f, a short distance below which, on each side, is another slat, ff, which projects upward in an oblique direction, parallel to the upper slat, f, which is secured upon the upper curved part or stationary cover of the box, the said slats ffff forming a chamber or recess, F, in each end of the box below the curved deflect ors G G, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

When the machine is at rest the suds will stand in the chambers F F; but in rocking the box upon its ways or bearings the said end chambers or recesses, F F, will be alternately emptied against the curved deflectors G and down upon the clothes, which are kept in the lower middle part of the box, the clothes being prevented by the oblique end slats, ff, from following the suds up into the chambers F, from which the water is projected up against the deflectors G and back upon the clothes, in the manner described.

By this arrangement of the end chambers, F F, and deflecting-shields G G "within the box the dirt is thoroughly and quickly washed out of the clothes without the least injury to them. Through an opening in one of the side pieces, B, closed with a plug or stopper, the dirty suds are emptied from the box.

The ribs 6 e e in the bottom of the machine, rubbing against the clothes, aid in the removal of the dirt, while the method of hanging the box by the curved rockers O is such as to cause but very little friction, so that the machine may be operated even by a child with perfect ease.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The rocking suds-box B, having curvilinear sides and curved bottom B, provided with a series of parallel ribs, 6 e e, and triangular slats f f, secured to each corner of the body, so as to project upward in an oblique direction parallel to bars f f, which are secured to the under side of the cover near the corners, said cover having concave deflectors G G, substantially as set forth.
