WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,861, dated August 26, 1902.
Application tiled March 29, 1902. Serial No. 100.640. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that weVILLIAM R. MCPHEE- soN and HARRY E. EURICR, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and'State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain-new and useful improvements in washboards, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a board is provided that maybe used on either side, one side beingformed in such a manner as to present a roughened surface and the reverse side being formed to present a smooth surface.
The invention further contemplates to provide a board which will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparativelyinexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use. A
Another object of our.invention is to provide a board with slats, the edges of said slats presenting a rubbing-surface, either smooth or rough, as desired; furthermore, to provide a space between the slats that will allow'the dirt and impurities from the clothes to pass Figure l is a front view of our improved.
washboard. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of a portion ofthe rubbingfsurface. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 0o of Fig. 3.
In the drawings the reference-numeral l represents the top cross-bar, l the side bars, and ll the bottom cross-bar,forming the frame for the rubbing-surface.
2 represents a series of transversely-arranged slats spaced apart by blocks 3, arranged in the recessed inner faces of the side bars 1'. These slats 2 are arranged at right angles to the plane of the frame, and each has one of its long edges rounded or curved, as at 4, and its opposite edges beveled, as at 5. These slats may be formed of any suitable material, and it is obvious that the curved edges of the entire series of slats will present a smooth rubbing-surface, while through the medium of the inclined edges a rough rubbing-surface is provided. The side bars l are detachably secured to the top and bottom cross-bars in any preferred manner, and it will be obvious that removal of the slats can be readily effected by removing one of the side bars.
The many advantages obtained by the use of our improved washboard will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a reversible Washboard, the combination with the frame having recessed side bars, of slats arranged at right angles to the plane of the frame and having their ends received in the said recessed sides, each of said slats having one of its long edges beveled and the other long edge rounded, and blocks arranged 'between the ends of the said slats.
2. In a reversible washboard, the combination of the frame, and slats spaced apart and arranged-at right angles to the plane of the frame, each of said slats having one of the long edges rounded, and the opposite edge inclined outwardly and downwardly, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
