(C1. 139 -199) This invention relates to small ware looms and particularly to improvements in the shuttle or weft carrying devices thereof.
The main object of the invention is to increase the yarn carryin capacity of the shuttle but other objects are to ensure an even tension on the yarn from a full shuttle until the yarn is exhausted and to enable the shuttle to be removed from the loom for replenishment whereby an empty shuttle can immediately be replaced by a full shuttle already threaded and the empty shuttle afterwards replenished for subsequent insertion in the 100m.
In the usual shuttle of a small ware loom the yarn is wound on to a bobbin or tube which is mounted on a quill or spindle parallel with the direction of movement of the shuttle and this quill or spindle is necessarily situated in the part of the shuttle which projects forwardly from the batten. The available space for the bobbin is thus restricted and the maximum diameter of a full bobbin is limited to such available space.
According to the present invention the yarn package is mounted on a spindle arranged in the shuttle at right angles to the direction of movement of the latter and instead of the shuttle being in direct engagement with the shuttle track on the batten it is carried by a holder from which it can be detached for replenishment of the yarn and which also allows it to project to the rear of the shuttle track into the space between the latter and the reed. In this way a yarn package containing a much greater length of yarn than the usual bobbin can be accommodated in the shuttle with a corresponding increase in the length of time which the shuttle will run without replenishment.
A further feature of the invention is that the shuttle is constructed in two parts, a rear part which carries the spindle to receive the yarn package and a front part in which the eye for the passage of the yarn is located and which also carries the means for applying the required drag or tension to the yarn, the two parts being locked together and to the shuttle holder when inserted into the latter.
The invention is illustrated in and will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a side View of the shuttle and shuttle holder.

The shuttle is constructed in two parts, a rear part A which carries the spindle a on which the yarn package C is mounted and which projects rearwardly from the shuttle track in the batten into the space between the latter and the reed and a front part B which projects forwardly from the said track.
The rear part A, which projects to'the rear of the shuttle holder consists of a longitudinal member. a and two forwardly projecting side members a the spindle a being secured to the longitudinal member and projecting forwardly therefrom midway between and parallel with the side members 11 The front part B is of magnet or horse shoe shape with the side members b thereof parallel with one another. The rear end 1: of each side member b is preferably rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit into the corresponding side members a, of the rear part A when the two parts are assembled together. Each side member a of the rear part A is formed of two resilient strips a between which the end 11 of the corresponding side b of the front part B is inserted and which when the shuttle is inserted in the shuttle holder D will be pressed onto the side b of the front part and projections a at the front ends of the strips a caused to engage in correspondinggrooves or recesses 17* in the top and bottom surfaces of the side member I) of the front part B thereby locking the parts A and B together.
The shuttle eye I) is formed centrally in the curved front end I) of the front part B, a drag or tension device being arranged between the nose of the yarn package C and the eye D The tension device consists of a pair of small toothed orfluted rollers E and E the roller E being mounted on a fixed pin e and the other roller E on a pin e carried at the end of a bent steel or other resilient arm E secured in a groove b in one of the side members b at some distance from the front of the shuttle so that the roller l1. carried thereby can move to and from the roller E on the fixed pin 6 The arm E is acted upon by a light spring E to apply the necessary tension to the yarn y as it passes between the rollers E and E The arm E also carries a thread guide e which serves to guide the yarn 11 into the nip of the rollers E and E The shuttle holder D is of rectangular shape with a central longitudinal slot d through which the rear end of the shuttle is inserted after the two parts thereof have been assembled together. The length of the slot at is the same as the width of the shuttle and its depth at the ends corresponds to the depth of the shuttle. The middle parts d of the top and bottom of the slot are however curved to permit of yarn packages C of greater diameter than the depth of the shuttle being carried by the spindle a.
A catch F controlled by a spring 1 is'pivotally mounted on a pin f located in the groove b in one of the side members 12 of the front part B and engages behind the holder D when the shuttle is inserted into the latter thus lockingv the shuttle in the holder and since. as before stated the two parts A and B of the shuttle are locked together by the pressure of .the holder on theresilient side members a of the rear part A, the two parts of the shuttle and the holder are securely'held together;v
To remove the. two? parts A and B of the shuttle from the holder D'for replenishing the yarn package it is only necessary to depress the'spring catch Fwhen the shuttle can be pulled out from the holder. The pressure holding the side members a of the rear part on the ends b of the side membersb of the rear part is at the same timeremoved so that the two'parts can be separated and a new yarn package placed. on the spindle a. The two parts can then be reassembled together, the yarn threaded through the tension device and eye and the shuttle is ready for replacement in the shuttle holder when the neXt replenishment is required.
The top and bottom faces of the holder D may each be formed with a longitudinal groove :1 and the shuttle tracks on the batten formed with corresponding ribs which enter the grooves 01 thereby increasing the bearing surface of. the holder.
Since the part A of the shuttle extends rearwardly of the holder D and therefore of the shuttle track in the batten of the loom and the spindle a on which the yarn package C is mounted is carried by the part A and projects through the holder it is evident that. a yarn package of considerable size can be carried by the-shuttle thereby permitting'the useof yarn packages containing a much greater length of yarn than the'bobbin which can be employed in the usual shuttle of a small'ware loom with a corresponding increase in the length of time which the shuttle will run without replenishment.
A shuttle formed in accordance with the invention can be adapted for use with most types of small ware looms whether the shuttle is driven by vertical pegs or pins or by rack and pinion gearing and whether the shuttle moves horizontally or swivelsin a curvedpath.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part, a frontpart, a holder for the two partswhich engages in the shuttle track of the loom, means for locking the two parts together and to the holder and a spindle carried by the rear part to support the yarn package which spindle projects both forwardly and rearwardly of the holder when the device is in the loom.
2. A weft carrying device fora small ware'loom comprising in combination a rear part, a front part, a holder for the two parts which'engages in the shuttle track of the loom, meansfor locking the two parts together and to the holder, a
spindle, carried by the rear part, which spindle supports the yarn package and which projects rearwardly of the shuttle track when the device is in the loom, a yarn eye for guiding the yarn carried by the front part and means also carried by the front part for applying tension to the yarn.
3. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and two forwardly projecting side members, a front part, a holder for the two parts which engages in the shuttle track of the loom, means for locking the two parts together and to the holder and a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the sidemembers.
4. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and two forwardly projecting side members, a front part, of horse shoe shape with the side members thereof parallel with one another, the rear end of each side member being rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit into the corresponding side member of the rear part when the two parts are assembled together, a holder for the two parts which engages in the shuttle track of the loom, means for locking the two parts together and to the holder and a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the side members.
5. A. weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and two forwardly projecting side members each formed of two resilient strips, a front member of horse shoe shape with the side members thereof parallel with one another, the rear end of each side member being rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit between the resilient strips forming the corresponding side member of the rear part, a holder for the two parts which when the two parts are inserted therein presses the aforesaid resilient strips on to the. side members of the front part to lock the two parts together, means for locking the holder to the two parts, a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the side members, a yarn eye in the front part and a tension device also carried by the front part for applying tension to the yarn.
6. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and twoforwardly projecting side members each formed of two resilient strips, a front member of. horse shoe shape with the side members thereof parallel with one another, the rear end of each side member being rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit between the resilient strips forming the corresponding side member of the rear part, a holder for the two parts which when the two parts are inserted therein presses the aforesaid resilient strips on to the side members of the front part to lock the two parts together, a spring controlled catch to lock the two parts to the holder, a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the side members, a yarn eye in the front part and a tension device also carried by the front part for applying tension to the yarn.
7. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and two forwardly projecting side members each formed of two resilient strips, a front member of horse shoe shape with the side members thereof parallel with one another, the rear end of each side member being rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit between the resilient strips forming the corresponding side member of the rear part, a holder for the two parts which when the two parts are inserted therein presses the aforesaid resilient strips on to the side members of the front part to lock the two parts together, a spring controlled catch to lock the two parts to the holder, a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the side members, a yarn eye in the front part and a tension device also carried by the front part for applying tension to the yarn, said tension device consisting of two fluted rollers between which the yarn passes, one roller being mounted on a fixed pin and the other on a pin carried by a spring controlled flexible or resilient arm affixed to one side member of the front part.
8. A weft carrying device for a small ware loom comprising in combination a rear part consisting of a longitudinal member and two forwardly projecting side members each formed of two resilient strips, a front member of horse shoe shape with the side members thereof parallel with one another, the rear end of each side member being rectangular in cross section and adapted to fit between the resilient strips forming the corresponding side member of the rear part, a holder for the two parts which when the two parts are inserted therein presses the aforesaid resilient strips on to the side members of the front part to lock the two parts together, the said holder being of rectangular shape provided with a slot to receive the shuttle and allow the rear part to project beyond it, the central portion of the slot being enlarged to increase the space for the reception of the yarn package, a spring controller catch to lock the two parts to the holder, a spindle which supports the yarn package secured to the longitudinal member of the rear part and projecting forwardly therefrom between and parallel with the side members, a yarn eye in the front part and a tension device also carried by the front part for applying tension to the yarn, said tension device consistingof two fluted rollers between which the yarn passes, one roller being mounted on a fixed pin and the other on a pin carried by a spring controlled flexible or resilient arm affixed to one side member of the front part.
