- p 9 Claims. (01. 206-56) This invention relates to improvements in lipstick containers and particularly to that type of container known as a swivelly-operated lipstick. v

One object of this invention is to provide a container in which various improvements have been incorporated, to cut down the costof manufacture of the'device, to design the container to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of the various parts and at the same time improve the operating mechanism so as to produce a smoother working article.

A further object is to make various improvements in the. carrier cup, one having reference particularly to the operating lug that cooperates with the mechanical movements of this container for propelling the cup axially within the container, and another is so designing the carrier 7 cup as to accommodate the various sizes of rouge'stick that prevail in the market.

With the foregoing and other objects in view,

which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described 'andclaimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed without departing from the spirit of the same. Referring now to the drawing in which like slightly enlarged of reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the'numeral l0. refers to an outer-casing or body usually in atubularfo'rm which, in this case, is shown made of metal'but can just as well be made from any one of the various molded products, such as Bakelite etc. Operating within the bodyv I0 is an inside shell "or operating sleeve ll having an integral enlarged operating head {2 at its lower end, the latter providing a shoulder I 2' adapted to engage against the' adjacent annular end of the body H). In order to provide a means on the carrier cup II to operate in the slot l1 and helical groove IS,

a longitudinal strap I8 is provided in the side wall of the cup I! as by means'of spaced parallel slits or shearings l8 (see Fig. 3). Formed outwardly from the intermediate portion of this strap I8 is a projecting U-shaped'operating lug I9; said lug being preferably formed on a bias to the axis of the cup M in conformity with the pitch of helical groove l6 and projecting through the slot I 1 and into the groove l6 (see Fig. l)'. Upon the rotation of the sleeve ll relative to the body It, the carrier cup M will be elevated and retracted in the usual manner of the so-called swivel type lipstick containers; The fact that the lug I9 is of U-shaped configuration and formed on a bias serves to prevent'a relatively loose or sloppy fit of the cup l4 within thecontainer, which isquite obvious in view of the manher that this particular biased U-shaped lug I9 fills up the axialjwidth of the helical groove l6 wherever the cup It may be disposed within the to the normal side wall of said cup, and a transverse U-shaped lug formed outwardly from an intermediate part of said strap, projecting through said slot and engageable in said helical groove whereby upon relative rotation of said sleeve to said casing said carrier cup will be advancedand retracted within said container.

In a lipstickcontainer, an outer casing having a helical groove formed in its inner wall; a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a longitudinal slot provided in its side wall; a carrier cup axially movable within said sleeve, said carrier cup having a U-shaped lug sheared and formed outwardly of the side wall withits slit edges arranged parallel to the axis of the cup for slidable engagement with the longitudinal edges of said slot, and the connecting ends of said lug biased at an angle corresponding substantially to the pitch of said casing groove and designed to have a relatively snug fit in and slidably ennarrower slot adapted to be engaged by a tool for collapsing said sleeve and permit there'moval of said sleeve from said casing.

4. In a lipstick container, an outer casing having a helical groove formed in its inner wall; a

sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and a longitudinal slot provided in its side wall, a carrier cup axially movable within said sleeve, said carrier cup having a relatively long strap sheared in the side wall thereof, capable of being sprung thereto and formed outwardly substantially the wall thickness of said sleeve and engageable in the slotthereof; and a lug member formed outwardly from an intermediate part of said strap at an angle corresponding substantially to the pitch of said groove and adapted to slidably engage in said groove whereupon relative turning of said shell and casing said cup will be advanced and retracted within said casing.

In a lipstick container, an outer casing; a cylindrical sleeve having a longitudinal slot in said casing; a carrier cup within said sleeve, said sleeve having an enlarged operating head at one end having a thrustengagement against the adjacent end of said casing, the opposite open end of said sleeve formed with a flange overlapping the adjacent end of said casing, the upper end of said slot having a continuous slot of relatively narrower ,width extended through the open end of said sleeve to permit the open end of said sleeve to be collapsed: and a pair of apertures provided in said sleeve on opposite side of the longitudinal slot in its side wall; a carrier cup in said sleeve; a U-shaped lug formed outwardly of the wall of said cup and at an angle diagonal to the longitudinal axis of said cup, the opposite connecting ends of said lug adapted to project through said slot and slidably engage with the opposite guiding edges of said groove and operable to advance and retract said cup uponrotation of said sleeve relative to said casing, the opposite narrow edges of said slot being cut on an angle corresponding substantially to the angle of said lug for the purpose of increasing the length of travel of said cup.

As an article of manufacture, a carrier cup for use in a swivel type of lipstick container having a coacting longitudinal slot'and .a helical groove, said carrier cup having a U-shaped lug sheared and formed out of the cup material with its sheared edges arranged parallel to the cup axis, and-the opposite connecting ends of said lug arranged on an angle corresponding substantially to the pitch of said helical groove and adapted to be guided by the opposite edges of said groove.

In a lipstick container, an outer casing having a helical groove formed in its inner wall, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a longitudinal slot provided in its side wall; a carrier cup axially movable within said sleeve, a lug projecting outwardly from the side wall of said cup and having two opposite edges arranged parallel to the cup axis and spaced for slidable engagement with the longitudinal edges of said slot, and the other two edges of said lug biased at an angle corresponding substantially to the pitch of said casing groove and adapted for slidable engagement with the opposite guiding edges of said groove, said lug in general substantially filling the adjacent space wherever the longitudinal slot crosses the helical groove.

9. In a lipstick container, an outer casing having a helical groove formed in its inner wall, a sleeve rotatably mounted in said casing and having a.longitudinal slot provided in its side wall; a carrier cup axially movable within said sleeve, a longitudinal guide projecting outwardly from the carrier cup wall of a height substantially equal to the sleeve thickness with its long edges parallel to the cup axis and slidably engaged in said longitudinal slot, a lug projecting outwardly from said guide having two opposed edges co-extensive with said guide edges and the remaining edges of said lug biased at an angle corresponding substantially to the pitch of said casing groove and adapted for slidable engagement with the opposite guiding edges of said groove, said lug in general substantially filling the adjacent space wherever the longitudinal slot crosses the helical groove.
