This invention relates to an improved tip for an umbrella.
In umbrella constructions at present available and in use, it is the practice to provide a tip having a cylindrical inner portion and a tip socket in the cylindrical portion with a transverse opening in the cylindrical portion outwardly of the socket. The cover of the umbrella is initially secured to the tip by turning the cover inside out and also positioning the position. After the thread is stitched through the opening and about one-half or the whole of the tip adjacent the hole or opening, the tip is turned with With a constructionV of this kind, the cover usually tears at the opposite ends of the opening through the tip, due to the fact that the strain of the stretched cover is applied on the thread. It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide an improved tip which will overcome vantages of the present tip in that the strain of the stretched cover will be borne by an abutment carried by the tip.
Furthermore, in
tip onto an umbrella cover, the stitching is done -by a machine which is provided with a tip supporting stud, but the operator of the machine is usually required to rotate the tip on the support until the hole aligns with the needle. This requires a careful positioning of the tip and close visible examination by the operator. Another object of this invention is to provide an improved tip which may be mounted on the stitching machine in the proper position by merely the feel y,
of the tip during the mounting operation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tip of this kind which will not onlir speed up the attachment of the tip to the cover but will also eliminate the possibility of breakage of the needle through misalignment of the hole with the needle.
To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention Vconsists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically tip in a reversed the disadstitching the present type of ,n
referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of an um- 55 sition so that the brella tip constructed according to an embodiment of this invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan of the tip.
Figure 3 is an inner endrelevation of the tip.
Figure 4 is a top plan of the tip partly broken away and in section showing the holding means for holding the tip during the stitching of the cover thereto.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan of the tip showing a fragmentary portion of the cover and the umbrella rib. y
Figure 6 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on the line 6--6 of Figure 5 Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on'the line 1-1 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Figure 7 but showing another form of stitching for holding the cover to the tip.
Referring to the drawing and first to Figures l, 2 and 3, the numeral I0 designates generally a vtip structure which is constructed according to an embodiment 0f this invention.
rIhe tip Ill includes an inner rib receiving socket II, a stem I2 extending outwardly from the socket member II and an ornamented head I3 which extends outwardlyr from the stem I2. The stem I2 adjacent the inner end thereof is provided with a transversely disposed opening I4 `through which threads are adapted to be stitched in order to hold the umbrella cover on the tip I0. The tip I0 is provided with a pair of laterally extending abutments I5 and I6 which are disposed substantially between the outer end of the socket II and the inner end of the stem I2. The abutments I5 and I6 are provided at their outer ends with shoulders I1 and I8, respectively, which are disposed at substantially right angles to the outer side of the stem I2. rI'he abutments I5 and I6 at their inner portionsV are tapered at an angle as shown at I9 and 20, respectively.
The socket II is provided with a pair of diametrically disposed parallel at faces 2| and with rounded sides 22 which merge with the opposite edges of the flat faces 2|. The stem I2 in transverse section is of substantially rectangular configuration. The inner end hereinbefore described is formed with the opposite flat sides or faces 2| which merge with the adjacent faces of the stem I2 in order that when the tip I0 is initially mounted on a tip retaining or holding pin 23, the opposite flat faces 2| of the tipv I0 may be disposed 1n an upper and lower pohole I4 will be positioned vertically. The holding or retaining pin 23 is as herein disclosed, the operation of attaching mounted in a carrier 24 forming part of an umthe tip to the cover and to the rib is not only is adapted to engage. the umbrella will not have a tendency to tear The carrier 24 is also provided with a resilient the COVer at the ODDOSite ends 0f the Opening I4 tipclamping nger 26, which is Secured by fasas is the case with tips at present in use.
