Application September 18,;1946, Serial No. 6912735 This invention relates to an implement for .unwearable by its owner.

The present invention has for its object to provide an efficient implement in the form of an extension bar of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be attached to the opposite ends of the collar band of a shirt after the latter has been washed and to hold said band against shrinking longitudinally While it is being dried, thereby obviating the objectionable feature just referred to.

To this end I have provided an extension bar implement of the character described which, in the preferred embodiment thereof, may be constructed and used as set forth in the following description, the several novel features of the invention being particularly pointed out and defined in the claims at the close of the description,

Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the two sections constituting the implement of Fig. 1.

Figure 5 shows the upper portion of a shirt with my new implement applied to the collar band thereof.

The illustrated embodiment of my invention is an extension bar comprising two straight elongate sections I and 2 of any suitable rigid material either metal or plastic, but preferably aluminum, each being a flat strip about ten inches long, one-half inch in width and about onesixteenth of an inch in thickness.

The section I is provided adjacent to its one end with a laterally projecting button or stud 3 having a shank whose one end is of reduced diametc-r and fitted within an aperture provided in section 1 where it is permanently and rigidly secured by upsetting the extremity of said reduced end portion. At its opposite end the shank of the button or stud 3 is provided with a head which may be in the form of a radial flange 4.

(Cl. 223-61) medial slot 5 which extends from a point near -(Figs. 1 and 4) having a shank l of a diameter to fit within slot- 5, said shank having one end thereof reduced in diameter and fitted within an aperture provided in section 2 where it is permanentlyand rigidly secured by upsetting the extremity of said reduced end portion. At its opposite end the shank l of stud B is provided with a head which may be in the form of a radial flange 8 adapted to seat upon section I at opposite sides of slot 5 when the parts of the implement are assembled as in Figs. 1 and 4.

Adjacent to the stud 5 the section 2 is provided with a tapped hole 8 (Fig. 4) that is occupied by the threaded end of the shank of a thumb screw 9 by means of which the two sections I and 2 are held clamped together while the implement is in use. At its opposite end the section 2 is made with a short longitudinal slot Ill whereof one end is open as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be clear that when thumb screw 9 is loose the two sections I and :2 may be adjusted endwise relatively thereby to vary the distance between button 3 of section I and slot Ill of section 2 and that stud 5 and thumb screw 9, which are spaced apart as shown, serve at all times to maintain the two sections superposed and relatively parallel.

In assembling the two elongate sections I and 2 the shanks of stud 6 and thumb screw 9 are slid into slot 5 at the open end thereof providing an elongate longitudinally extensible and contractiiole bar having at its one end a button 3 for insertion within the usual button-hole I i (Fig. 5) provided at one end of the collar band l2 of a shirt I3, and having at its opposite end a slot H! bordered by two fingers I4 (Fig. 2), said fingers being adapted to be slid into position between the collar band it and the usual button l5 sewed in position upon the opposite end of the collar band.

The implement is applied in this fashion to the collar band I2 while the latter is damp or wet after which the two sections are slid endwise relatively so as to stretch the collar band whereupon thumb screw 9 is set up tight to fix the two sections in their relatively adjusted positions. It will be clear that as the shirt dries while the implement is in position thereon the collar band cannot shrink longitudinally so that when after removal of the implement, the shirt becomes dry and is put into use, the collar band will be of proper length.

What I claim is:

1. An implement for use in stretching the collar band of a shirt that is provided with an attached collar, said implement consisting of a longitudinally extensible and contractible bar comprising two relatively parallel elongate bar sections having inner end portions that are overlapped and slidably fitted together; manually adjustable means for fastening said inner end portions fixedly together but with provision for longitudinal adjustment of said sections relatively to vary the length of the bar when said mean is manually adjusted to free said inner end portions; a button stud projecting laterally from one of said sections adjacent to the outer end thereof and adapted to be inserted in the buttonhole at one end of the collarband of a shirt, and means adjacent to the outer end of the other section for engagement with the button at the opposite end of the collarband of said shirt.

2. An implement for use in stretching the collarband of a shirt that is provided with an attached collar, said implement consisting of a longitudinally extensible and contractible bar comprising two relatively parallel elongate fiat bar sections having inner end portions that are overlapped and slidably fitted flatwise together, one of said sections being formed with a longitudinal medial slot; a thumb screw having its threaded shank occupying a threaded hole formed in the other section and extending through said medial slot so that when tightened said thumb screw fastens said inner end portions fixedly together; a button stud projecting laterally from said slotted section adjacent to the outer end thereof and adapted to be inserted in the buttonhole at one end of the collarband of the shirt, and a short longitudinal slot adjacent to the outer end of the other section for engagement with the button at the opposite end 'of aid collarband.

3. An implement of the character described according to claim 2 and wherein the section that is provided with the threaded hole is also provided with a laterally projecting stud adjacent to the latter which occupies said medial slot and cooperates with said thumb screw to maintain the two sections parallel.
