Definitions
- the invention consists in connecting the bell with a crank-shaft placed in an ornamental figure above the clock and conuectin g the hammer-tail with the crank-shaft thus arranged, whereby the alarm-movement communicates through the hammer-tail the vibratory movement to the shaft, and thereby vi brates the bell and sounds the alarm.
Description
(No Model.)
FQKROEBER Alarm-Clock. No. 228,202. Patented June1,1880.
" itness es.- I 707672607:
Z%i% W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORENCE KROEBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ALARM-CLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 228,202, dated June Application filed April 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE KROEBER,
I of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Alarm-Clocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin the arrangement of the bell for sounding the alarm and the connection of the movement with the bell; and the object of the invention is to so arrange the bell that it will be situated outside of the case instead of inside, as heretofore.
The invention consists in connecting the bell with a crank-shaft placed in an ornamental figure above the clock and conuectin g the hammer-tail with the crank-shaft thus arranged, whereby the alarm-movement communicates through the hammer-tail the vibratory movement to the shaft, and thereby vi brates the bell and sounds the alarm.
The invention also consists of details of construction and arrangement, which will be fully described fart-her on in the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved alarm-clock. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the center of the figure and a part of the clock-case on a plane parallel to the face of the clock. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of the bell, showing the manner of connecting it with the hand of the figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the face of the clock; B, the shellor case, of suitable form; C, the alarm-movement; a, the escapement; D, the hammer-tail.
E represents the figure'standing on a base, F, which is placed over an opening, G, in the shell just over the alarm-movement. The said base F has on each side ears I), which rest on the shell 13, and are connected with the said shell by screws or other suitable devices, whereby the opening Gr in the shell or case is completely covered in, and the figure E is firmly attached to the shell or case of the clock. The figure E and base F are hollow, and, it will be observed, are made in two parts, cl 6, the two parts being put together so as to conceal as nearly as possible the joint, and connected by screws or in any other suitable (No model.)
manner. In part displaced the crank-shaft K in suitable bearings f. One end of the crank-shaft projects out of its bearing f, and is connected to the arm H of the figure. The hammer-tail D extends from the escapement a to the crank-shaft K.
When the movement 0 operates the vibratory movement of the escapement a is communicated through the hammer-tail D to the crank-shaft K, which is thereby vibrated and communicates the vibratory movement to the arm H.
I represents the bell. The clapper g is pivoted to the screw-shaft h, which is passed through the hand 2' and secured by a nut screwed on its projecting end. The bell is thus attached to the vibrating arm H, and partakes of its movement.
\Vhen the escapement a is vibrated the motion is communicated through the hammertail D and crank-shaft K and arm H to the bell I, and when the arm H moves in obedience to the action of the escapement, the bell being vibrated, the alarm is sounded by the bell I.
I have described the invention as applied to the arm of the representation of a human figure; but it is evident that the design of the figure E may be materially varied without depart-in g from the spirit of this invention.
I claim- 1. The combination of the hammer-tail D of an alarm-clock with the crankshaft K, vibrating arm H, and vibrating bell I, substantially as described.
2. In an alarm-clock, the hollow figure E, in combination with the hammer-tail D, crankshaft K, vibrating arm H, and vibrating bell I, substantially as described.
3. The hollow figure E, with the crank-shaft K, vibrating arm H, bell I, and base F, in combination with. the case or shell B of the clock, provided with the opening G, substantially as described.
4-. The bell I, having clapper g and screwshaft h, in combination with the hand z'and vibratory arm H, substantially as described.
FLORENCE KROEBER. Witnesses: 4
