THWTED STATES EUGENE ISAAC HALSTEAD, OF PLAINVILLE, "WISCONSIN.
CLOCK AND CALL-BELL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921.
Application filed August 18, 1919. Serial No. 318,212.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE ISAAC HAL- STEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Adams and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Clock and Call-Bell of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to call bells, its principal object being to provide a call bell in conjunction with a time piece, the time piece serving as a mounting for the call bell.
A further object of the invention is to provide a call bell which may be associated with any clock possessing the usual alarm, the construction being such as to permit the device to be readily engaged or disengaged from the clock.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a call bell which is supported on a time piece in such a manner as to permit the bell being readily operated, the construction of the clock remaining the same and performing the usual function as well as mounting the bell.
Another general object of the invention is to provide a clock and'call bell having the above characteristics which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which may be manufactured and sold at minimum cost.
With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists of the combinations of elements, constructions and arrangements of parts, operation and general assemblage all of which Wlll be hereinafter enlarged upon and set forth in the appended claim, the invention being illustrated in the attached drawings, where- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a clock having my improved call bell mounted thereon, part of the bell being shown in vertical cross section;
Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating the bell mounted on the rear face of the clock, part of the bell being broken away; i
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged detail View partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating the operating parts of the bell, and the manner of mounting the same on the clock.
Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference designate like parts in all of the views, the numeral 5 designates an alarm clock of the ordinary construction same having a threaded extension 11 which extends through an opening 12 in the bell 13 and engaged therewith is a nut 14 which is jammed against the outer face of the bell. The extension 11 is provided with a longitudinal bore 15 'in which is mounted a plunger 16 provided with a head 17 upon its lower end. The bracket 10 is provided with a vertically extending ear to which is pivotedly connected a weighted bell striker 18. The pivoted end of this striker 18 is provided with a laterally extending lug 19 which is engaged by the head 17 of the plunger 16 upon the descension of the same. The lower leg of the U-shaped bracket is engaged beneath the flange of the clock and is retained in position by a screw 20.
In Fig. 2 a modified form of the inven tion is illustrated. In this embodiment of the invention the bell 13 is mounted upon the rear face of the clock while the plunger 16 is slidable in a bracket 17 on this face of the clock. The construction of the bracket is the same except the threaded eX- tension 11 is omitted. and is attached to the clock in any desired manner. The striker and other construction in both embodiments of the invention is identical.
It will be noted that by providing means such as have been described, the alarm clock can exercise its ordinary functions as such but, in addition thereto, the bell can be sounded whenever desired simply by pressing upon the plunger forming a part of the present invention, A
The disclosure here shown and described is illustrative only and it will be understood that the. same may be modified in many respects and that my limits of modification are only governed by what is claimed.
What is claimed is A call attachment for alarm clocks, comprising a U-shaped member for insertion between an alarm clock and its bell to connect the bell to the clock, a tubular stud proj ecting from said member for insertion into the engaged bell, a ring carrying member engaging the stud to'secure the bell on the In testimony that I claim the foregoing member, a lever fulcrumed in the member as my own, Ihave hereto afiixed my signaand having an extension at its pivot end, ture in the presence of two'witnesses.
said lever constituting a striker, V and a EUGENE ISAAC I-IALSTEAD. plunger slida-bly mounted in the tubular Witnesses: stud and engaging the extension of the lever A, (l. PETERS,
to operate said lever as a, striker. I J. H. MARVIM.
