SAMUEL R. KROUSE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR IO AUGUSTUS B. ELFELT, ALBERT A. LEVI, SOLOMON GOLDSMITH, AND ALFRED P. ELFELT, OF SAME PLACE.
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,981, dated May 25, 1880.
Application led December 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. KRoUsE, of the city and county of. San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement inOveralls; and Il hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. i
My invention relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of overalls and that class of garments intended for outside wear; and it consists in an improved construction and application of strengthening-strips,stays, and re-enforce pieces, by which the body of the fabric, pocket-corners, and seams are strengthened, the parts are united to form a more complete mutual bond or support, while from their form aconsiderable economy of material is e'ected in the cutting of these parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my garment with the improved stay. Fig. i is an enlarged view of a portion, showing the inside pocket, &c.
The demand of miners, farm-hands, woodcutters, and other laborers for a stronger class of clothing has led to the manufacture of specially heavy goods for overalls, jumpers, Sto., and many inventions have been patented for improvements in strengthening the pocketcorners, seams, and other parts which are liable to be torn out by heavy strains. In some of these detached strips are secured across the pocket-corners and seams, while in others the pocket, waistband, and back straps are formed in a single piece, which is stitched upon the outside of the garment proper.
In my invention, A is apair of overalls, having the waistband B secured to the upper edge in the usual manner.
Instead of securing the pockets to the outside of the garment, as is frequently done with this class of goods, the front pockets, C, are stitched upon the inside, as shown, a proper opening being made at the top for the purpose of allowing access to them. A re-enforcing strip, D, extends across the tops of each of these pockets, and is stitched thereto. The ends of this strip are carried up across the belt or waistband, thus forming button-stays E E. This strip is extended so as to cross the hip-seam F, and at this point it is carried downward to a point at G, so as to provide a broad, and at the same time ornamental, re-enforce. one or morepieces, so as to form the back strap H. The watch-pocket K has a re-enforce, L, stitched to its upper edge to strengthen it, as shown. By this construction I form the re-enforce D for the pockets and the stays E and hip-re-enforce G in one piece, but independent from the pocket or waistband, so that when stitched in place the thickness of the goods is doubled, and in some places trebled, thus adding considerably to the strength, while the re-enforces are cutout with the greatest economy of material.
The back pocket I is stitched to the outside of the overalls, and the re-enforcing strip J, which extends along the top, is peculiarly attached, being stitched along the inside ofthe pocket until it reaches the sides, where it passes between the pocket and the garment, 'and is thus brought to the outside, so that it is stitched along the inner upper edge of the pocket, but has its ends stitched to the outside of the garment beyond the sides of the pocket. rIhis makes a neat, strong, and serviceable re-ent'orce for this pocket.
l am aware that independent rc-enforcing strips have been employed to strengthen the corners of pockets, and that button-stays are made in the same manner.4 I am also awa-re that the pocket-stays and back strap have been formed in a single piece, and also that the waistband, pocket re-enforce, and back strap have been made in one piece. I do not, therefore, claim these constructions; but
What l do claim as new, and desire torsecure by Letters Patent, is
The garment A, provided with an interior pocket, C, and pocket-opening, in combination The strip is continued back either in' with the separatore-enforce, cut as shown, i
forming the pocket re-enforce D, side-seam reenforce G, and Vbutton-stays E, in one piece, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
s. n. Knoosn.
