DANIEL WITT, OF HUBBARDSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO LEWIS E. BATHRIGK, OF WINOHENDON, MASSACHUSETTS.
B OOT-JAC K.
\ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,939, dated May 25, 1880.
Application filed March 10, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, DANIEL WITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbardston, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Boot-Jacks, which has never been patented to myself or to others, with my consent or knowledge, in any foreign country or in the United States, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an Improvement in boot-jacks, so that they can be folded up when 'not in use and placed in the pocket or in a case, and take up much less room than the old form, thereby being much handier and more ornamental and useful. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the top of the jack as it is when open and :ready for use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the jack when open. Fig. 3 is a top view of the jack shut. Fig. 4 is a side view of the jack when shut or folded up.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The two arms D D, the hinge A, the hinge arms B B, and legs E E constitute the principal part of my invention.
A represents the pivotal hinge for fastening the arms D D at the base of the jack. A projection from the center of one of the ends of the arm D is inserted into a slot in the other arm, as shown, and fastened by the pin, as represented, forming the hinge A.
The hinge-arms B B are fastened together at C, and their other ends inserted and pivotally secured in the slot G, Fig. 2, near the legs E, on each arm, and are so fitted that they will shut together and slide into the slot G,
as shown in Fig. 3. The legs E are best shown 4o To prevent the legs from being turned the 45 wrong way a projection is made ou the arms.
`as shown, which receives the legs against it when folded and enters the slot Fin the legs.
The arms D D are cast with slots in them, as shown at G G G in Fig. 2, for the purpose 5o of receiving the hinge-arms B B, and also to make them lighter.
Fig. 3 shows the jack with hinge-arms B B folded into the slots G G.
What I claim as my invention isl. An improved boot-jack consisting of two arms or portions, D D, connected at the base by the hinge A, and provided with the folding hinge-arms B B and legs E E, all arranged and operating as set forth.
2. In a boot-jack, the combination, with the arms or portions D D, provided with the connecting device A and hinge-arms B B, of the legs E E, adapted to fold in upon the sides of the jack, all substantially as set forth. 65
3. ln combination with the slotted 'arms or portions D D, provided with -stops or projections, the folding legs E E, all arranged and operating substantially as set forth anddescribed.
DANIEL WITT. Witnesses: WM. J. MINEARD, EVERARD WITT.
