(Modeh) To all whom 131; may concern Be it known that we, HENRY V. TILSON, ALoNzo GANDY, and JOHN R. SHUGERT, of Freeport, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace or Tug Buckles; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to IO which our invention pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which drawings- Figure l a longitudinal section of our i|nproved buckle.

This invention has relation to llllpI'OVGlIlGlltS in trace or tug buckles for harness, which effect the fastening or buckling of the trace or tug in an exceedingly simple, expeditious, and effectual manner; and they consist of a frame with side slots and its forward end adapted to permit of the tongue fitting snugly therein, the tongue having its rear end formed or provided with a thumb-piece or lip, and fitting over projections on the frame-plate,

substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

The forward end of the frameA is provided on one side with a plate, I), having a recess or depression, I), on its inner side to receive the tongue, to enable its outer surface to rest flush with the inner surface of the frame-plate I), and to fit snugly therein to provide for the proper passage of the trace or tug through 5 the frame.

A semicircular or other suitably-shaped rccess, c, is made in the rear edge of the plate I), to permit thewithdrawal ofthe tongue, with Fig.2 is a cross-section of its stud or projection, from contact with the trace or tug within the smallest possible compass, or to allow the tongue and its stud to swing clearof the plateb within alimited space, thus avoiding the enlarging of the frame or buckle for that purpose, as is necessary in the manufacture of the ordinary buckle. B is the tongue-plate, provided with projections or lugs e, fitting in the tapering or wedgeshaped slots (till the frame of the buckle, said plate being further provided with a tongue proper or projection, j", which enters any one of the holes of the trace or tug to which it may be adjusted in buckling or fastening the trace, as is well understood, and illustratedin Fig. 1.

Ey simply pressing with the thumb or finger outwardly on the piece 9 of the buckle tongue, after first slipping the ton gue-plate back sufficiently to enable its forward edge and tongue proper, f, to clear the recessed edge of the frameplate b, the tongueplate, with tongue f, can be easily and quickly withdrawn from the trace or tug, and thus permit or effect the unbuckling of the strap or trace without comparatively any appreciable trouble or delay.

To buckle the trace or strap, it is only necessary to pass the latter through the frame A the requisite distance and insert the tongue f of the plate 13 in the coincident holein the strap, and then draw on the trace or strap until the tongue-plate is brought or wedged in between and against the plate b of the frame A, which 5 i will effectually lock the parts together.
