SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 648,650, dated May 1, 1 900. Application filed November 23, 1899. Serial No. 738,114. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concer-7c:
Be it known that I, HENRY JAMES BICKLE, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Gladstone, county of Westbourne, Province of Manitoba, Canada, haveVA invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles; and I do hereby declare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
This invention relates to an improved har-4 nessfbuckle; and one object is to provide a harness-buckle which is simple in construction,of only two parts, aud which is effective in operation and can be manufactured at a moderate cost. j
A further object is to provide a harnessbuckle constructed of two parts which may be readily connected and disconnected.
To t ese endsthe invention consists in a harnes -buckle constructed substantially as herein illustrated and described, and dened in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a harnessbuckle constructed in accordance with this invention in its operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one member of the buckle, and Fig. 4 is a similar view ofthe second member of the buckle.
- In the drawings, A represents one portion or section of a trace, and A' the adjustable section, which is adapted to be adjustably connected with the section A by means of the improved buckle.
The buckle is constructed of the two members B and B', which are made of any suitable metal and may be nickeled, plated, or otherwise ornamented, as desired. The member B is constructed of the two side arms b, which are separated to receive the trace between them aud are united at one end by the bar b', by means of which the member B is secured to the trace-section A, as is clearly shown in Fig. l. The side arms bof the member B may be provided with the usual loops C, if desired. The side arms b extend forwardly in a slight upward curve and are united at their forward ends by means of the bar b2. At a point adjacent to the rear bar b' each of the arms b is provided with a recess b3, and the portion of each of the 'arms b adjacent to the forward end of these recesses is beveled, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. y
The member B is constructed of the side arms b4, which are united at their rear ends by the plate b5, on the upper face of which is xed the vertical lug be. The arms b4 extend above theupper face of the plate b5 and serve as guides for the trace, which is adapted to lie between them. At the rear extremity of each of the arms b4 is formed a laterally-extending lug b", which lugs are adapted to slide upon the upper side of the arms b of the member B, as shown in Fig. l. The forward ends of the arms b4 are united by the bar bs, upon one edge of which is formed the loop b9, and upon the other edge of which is formed the lip b1", which projects rearwardly and is slightly inclined upwardly, whereby it is adapted to engage and rest upon the bar b2, as is clearly shown in Figs. l and 2.
A loop or keeper C may be secured to the section A of thev trace to retain the end of the section A of the adjustable portion of the trace, as best shown in Fig. l.
The buckle member Bf is first secured to the adjustable section A of the trace by passing the lug b' through one of the usual buckle-holes formed therein. The end of the trace-section A is then passed through the buckle member B, which is secured to the trace-section A in any desired manner, until the lugs 197 are brought into alinement with the recesses b3,when the buckle member B' is slightly canted and moved forwardly, whereupon t-he said lugs 197 will slide upon the upper edges of the arms b. The member B' is moved far enough to permit the lip bw to pass the bar b2, whereupon the member B' is moved backwardly until thelip b1 engages and rests upon the bar b2, thus locking the two members together. The buckle members are separated by reversing the above-described operation.
To adjust the trace-section without separating the buckle members, it is only necessary to cramp the buckle member B down until the lip Z210 is disengaged from the bar b2. Then by pressing down upon the plate b5 the IOO lug b6 -will pass out of the hole in the adj ustable trace-section A. The buckle member B' thus assumes a position substantially at right angles to the adjustable trace, the lugs b7 passing through the recesses b3. The tracesection A' can now be adjusted .to the required point and the buckle member' returned to its.former position, .as will be obvious.
While I have herein shown a preferred form of carrying my invention into effect, yet I do not desire to limit myselfto such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into eiect the objects to be attained by this invention, in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
I claimv 1. A harness-buckle, comprising two members, one of which is adapted to be secured to the trace and constructed of side arms provided with recesses; bars uniting said sidey arms; a detachable buckle member constructed of side arms; a plate uniting said side arms and provided with a vertical lug for engagement with the adjustable portion of the trace; lugs formed on said side arms and adapted to pass through said recesses and engage the side arms of the fixed buckle meniber; a bar uniting the outer ends of the side arms of, ,the detachable member; a rearwardlyextending lip integral with said bar and adapted to engage the forward bar of said xed buckle member, substantially as described.
2'. The combination with a fixed trace-section and an adjustable trace-section, of a harness fbuckle, comprising a member secured to said fixed trace-section,and provided with upwardly-curved side arms, and having suitable recesses formed in said side arms; a bar 5uniting the outer ends of said side arms; a detachable buckle member provided with upwardly-curved side arms; a plate uniting said side arms and provided with a vertical lug for engagement with trace-section; lugs formed on said side arms and adapted to pass through the recesses of the side arms of the fixed buckle member and engage the side arms thereof; a bar uniting said adjustable the outer ends of the side arms of the detachable buckle member; arearwardly-lextending lip integral with said bar and adapted to engage `the forward bar of said txed buckle member, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY JAMES ABICKLE.
