Patented Feb. 17, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ANIMAL GARMENT Marcelite F. Hafner, New York, N. Y. Application May 14, 1940, serial No.v 335,173
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in animal garments and in the present embodiment thereof, it is illustrated as a blanket for dogs.
It is one of the objects of the invention to procertain portions of the garment may have movement relative to each other thereby to permit of free andeasy action or movement of the animal by which it is worn.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a garment which may be easily applied to an animal, readily secured in position thereon, which is ornamental in appearance and which will Vbe retained in position upon the animals body.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the nature thereof is better understood, and' reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a garment constructed in accordance with the present invention, in operative position upon an animal, for example a dog.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the garment on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 isa transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale, the View being taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View illustrating a modified form of garment.
The garment is designated A, and it comprises two similar side members IU and II. The side members are secured together in that form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, by means of a strip of elastic webbing or other stretchable material I2. This strip `I2 is preferably narrow and is secured to one of the side edges of each of the side members I and II, by a line of stitching, these lines of stitching being designated I3 and I4 respectively.
Each of the side sections is provided with an opening I5 for the reception of one of the fore legs of an animal when the garment is in position thereon. The two opposite side edges of the side members I0 and Il, that is the two free side edges, are adapted to be secured together `to retain the garment in position. In order that the garment may be readily positioned upon the animal and as readily removed therefrom, I prefer to use a separable fastener in the form of a slide fastener 20 by which these results may be obtained.
Upon the forward end of the garment, I provide a collar I8 which preferably consists of a single strip of material secured to the edge of the front end of the garment in such asmanner that it may be extended forwardly as illustrated in Figure l, or folded in a rearward direction to overlie the forward portion of the body ofthe garment.
In Figure 2, the garment is illustrated in closed position. To apply it to the body of an animal, the garment is opened by moving the slide 2| of the slide fastener forwardly of the garment to a point where it may be removed entirely with respect to one side member of the garment, thus permitting the garment to open. With the garment opened, the animals fore legs are positioned within the openings I5 provided therefor, after which the side members are brought into body encircling position, and the slide of the slide fastener moved in a rearward position to close the garment and retain it in body encircling position.
When the garment is in position upon the animal, the elastic or stretchable section forms the under body member of the garment, the fastening means extending along the center of the animals back.
The elastic or stretchable underbody section performs two functions as follows: First, it provides a snug fit for the garment and, second, it permits to a limited extent, individual movement of the side members l0 and II, in the lower portions thereof.
This latter function is important in that it provides for a snug t of the garment at all times Without hampering free and easy movement of the animal.
In that form of the invention illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the elastic or stretchable section I2 is dispensed with, the side sections I0 and II being secured directly together as by a seam 25. In other respects, this form of the invention is similar to the form illustrated in Figures 1 through 3 of the drawing.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a novel garment of the type set forth in which the recited objects have been accomplished.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
As an'article of manufacture, an animal garment comprising a body encircling member formed of two similar side members of nonstretchable material, an under body member of stretchable material extending throughout the length of the body encircling member for connecting said side members together and to permit of independent adjustment thereof, a leg opening formed in each of said side members, a collar of non-elastic material secured to one end of each side member, and means for securing the garment in body encircling position, said last mentioned means comprising a separable fastener for securing together, the unattached side edges of 5 the side members.
