F. J. LOZO SUSPENDERS Filed May 2., 1940 L awam/view E'tmi Lazo'V Patented Nov. 11, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SUSPENDERS Frank J. Lozo, Sas katcon, Saskatchewan, Canada Application May 2f 1940, Serial No. 333,047
1 claim.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of gannent suspenders yand aims particularly to provide improved means for connecting the yfront diverging ends of-a pair of shoulder straps to pairs of button straps to permit the shoulder straps and button straps to adjust automatically relatively to each other` to prevent the supported garment from being distorted where the hang of the garment does not naturally correspond to the normal angle of support of the suspenders.
More particularly, it is an aim of this invention to provide a pair of suspenders for trousers having means for swivelly connecting button straps to the shoulder straps to permit automatic adjustment of the parts relatively to each otheiI so that the trousers may hang naturally and so that the front crease of the trousers will not be distorted.
Still a further aim of the invention is to provide improved means for connecting the shoulder straps and button straps including pairs of plates having co-acting means for swivelly connecting the plates of each pair, said means being readily detachable for detaching the suspenders from the trousers without removing the button straps.
Still another object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjustably and detachably connecting corresponding ends of pairs of button straps to the corresponding plates of said pairs of connecting plates to position the straps in diverging relationship relatively to each other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention Will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a pair of suspenders showing a pair of the connecting plates assembled and connecting a shoulder strap to a pair of button straps,
Figure 2 is an enlarged top plan view showing the invention assembled and similarly connected to the button straps and a shoulder strap,
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the parts as shown in Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken Vsubstantially along the plane of the line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a top plan view of one of the pair of connecting plates, and
Figure 6 is a similar view of the other plate. Referring more particularly to the drawing,
wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, lil designates generally a portion of a pair of suspenders having their diverging free ends looped at |2 and provided with the conventional slide clamps |3 for adjusting the length of the loops l2 and Vof the shoulder straps ll. These parts are of conventional construction and are illustrated for the purpose of illustrating the application of the invention, designated generally at l4, and which will hereinafter be described.
The invention, designated generally [4, comprises a pair of connecting plates for connecting a looped end |2 of a shoulder strap ll to a pair of button straps |5 which are provided adjacent their free ends with buttonholes |6 for engaging a pair of spaced buttons, not shown, on the front portion of a pair of trousers, not shown, or other garment to be supported by the suspenders IO.
The pair of connecting plates |4 includes the plates l6 and ll the former of which is provided adjacent its upper edge with a slot |8 for engaging the loop l2 to thereby connect the plate l6 to one of the shoulder straps ll. Below the slot 18,- the plate IS is provided with an outwardly projecting lug 19 having a triangular shaped head 20 and a restricted shank 2l. As best seen in Figure 5, head 20 is dispcsed so that one side of its triangle is transversely of the plate IG and adjacent its lower edge.
Plate l'l adjacent its upper end, is provided with a triangular shaped opening 22 of suflicient,
size for the passage of the head 20. One side of the opening 22 is disposed transversely of the plate ll and adjacent its upper edge. Plate ll is also provided with two rows of spaced slots 23 and said rows being disposed in downwardly diverging relationship relatively to each other and with each of said slots extending outwardly and upwardly relatively to the side edges of the plate ll. As best seen in Figure 6, the lower edges of the upper slots and the upper edges of the lower slots are toothed at 24., for a purpose which will hereinafter be apparent.
From the foregoing it may be seen, that the ends of the button straps IE, opposite to the ends provided with the button-holes may be passed upwardly through the lower .slots 23, from the back of the plate toward the front of the plate, back through the upper slots 23, back again to the front of the plate through the intermediate slots and then out to the rear through the lower slots. The toothed edges 24 will prevent these upper ends of the straps |5 from slipping when the suspenders IO are in use While the length of the straps may be adjusted, as desired.
It is to be understood that the other shoulder strap H Will be provided with a similar connector I4 and it will be aplparent that when these pairs of Connectors l4 are assembled, as in Figures 1 to 4, the plates IB and ll' Will be swivelly mounted relatively to each other and may angularly adjust themselves relatively. to each other, automatically, to equalize the pull on the pairs ofi button straps |5 so that the suspenders |0 Will not distort the hang of the garment to Which it is connected. Since the tri-` angular head l9 is disposed so that its points are disposed above the sides of the triangular opening 22, when the plates` IB and I'l are in an` extended position relatively to each other, the
plates will not be accidentally disconnectcdzsinca the swing of the plates relatively to each other Will not be suflicient to aline the head 20 with the opening. 22- However, the susi)@ridersY` wv may be readily disconnected from the front. ofthe: garment t0 which itpis attached` by turning, the; plate l'l in either direction untilV the; head; zojalines with; thel opening 22 after which theb plate. l'l. maybeV pulled Qutwardly relatively to. the plate IB to cause the, head zflto pass. through Opening 22. thus diseneagins; the pairsv of plates and disengaging the 'suspenders from the front of the garment. I
Various modications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to as only a preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described.
I claim as my invention: V
A connecting means for suspender shoulder straps and suspender button straps, comprising pairs of connecting plates, each of said pairs of plates including a plateV connected to an end of a shoulder strap and having an outwardly projecting stud provided Withv a triangular shaped head, the other plate being connected torapair of button straps and being provided With.V a triangular shaped opening for the passage therethrough of'the head, said head and opening being outlof registry when the plates are inl normal extended positions relatively to each' other, one corner of the head being arranged to pointtowardthe remote end of. the first; mentioncd` plate, and one. corner ofV the. opening being arranged to pointV toward1the remote end of thelast mentioned platewl'ierebyV one; of the sides ofV the ,opening wil-1 normally-:engage and rest uponsaidstud..
