JOHN BAUMAN, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
'lNKS'l'AND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,155, dated April 6, 1880. Application filed December 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, JOHN BAUMAN, of the city of Oshkosh, county of Winnebago, State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement on an Inkstand-Lid, of which the ibllowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved inkstand-lid; and it has for its object to provide such a lid that may be cheaply constructed, and that may be conveniently opened by the forefinger or hand in inserting the pen in the in kstand, as more fully hereinafter specified.
Inkstands ith this last-mentioned object in View have been heretofore constructed; but in these the lid has been operated by a wire guard having no permanent connection with the lid, and located in such position with respect thereto that it is almost impossible to open the lid and insert the pen with any degree of accuracy in the inkstand.
By my invention this objection is wholly obviated; and the invention consists in a lid constructed with a forwardly and upwardly projecting curved extension, which will be naturally engaged by the forefinger or other portion of the hand in carrying the pen to the inkstand, so as to raise the lid at the same time the pen is inserted and guide the pen into the mouth of the inkstand.
In the drawings, Figure 1 indicates a sectional View of an inkstand showing my improvement; Fig. 2, a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 a detached view of a modified form of the extension.
The letter A indicates the body of the inkstand, and B the top, hinged at G to the usual annulus attached to the inkstand at its mouth.
The letter D indicates a curved extension forming part of or attached to the lid at its front, and extending outwardly and upwardly, so as to be engaged by the hand carrying the pen, as shown in Fig.1 of the drawings. The said extension may be plain, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or corrugated, as shown in Fig. 3, and may be of any design or configuration, according to taste or fancy.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An inkstand-lid hinged to the inkstand and constructed with a forwardly and upwardly curved extension adapted to be engaged by the hand carrying the pen to the inkstand and be elevated thereby for the insertion of the pen, substantially as herein specified.
JOHN BAUMAN.
