Description

I. S. DAVIS. Door-Spring.
No. 225,973 Patented Mar. 30,1880.
N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON o c UNITE STATES IRA S. DAVIS, OF YPSILANTL MIGHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO SARAH J. WISE, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,973, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed January 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA S. DAVIS, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorand Grate Springs;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of ten- 1 sion or spiral springs which are adapted for connection to doors or gates and the frames thereof in such a manner that the tension of the spring may be regulated at will, to cause said spring to either hold the door or gate open or shut; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the locking-head and ratchetjournal shaft with the spiral spring, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure .l represents a perspective view of my invention as applied to a door and its frame. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a modification of my 0 invention; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view of Fig. 1. 7
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the torsion or spiral spring, the
3 5 lower coil of which is adapted to fit under the lower clamping-plate, B, in such a manner that the screw a ,-which secures the said plate to the frame 0 of the door, passes through both the clamping-plate and the coil of the spring to rigidly hold and lock the same in position at the bottom.
D represents the coupling-journal, which is attached to the upper part of the spiral spring A by turning the end of the wire of which 5 the spring, is formed down into the opening bin the journal, as shown in the drawings, said journal being provided with an angular portion, E, and with lugs c at its top.
B represents the upper clamping plate,
which is adapted to be secured to the door or gate Gr by means of screws a, as shown, said plate being provided on its lower surface with ratchet-teeth d, for engagement with the lugs c on the top of the coupling-journal D. The clamping-plate B -is also formed with a cylindrical recess, 6, nearly its entire depth, within which fits a spiral spring, H, through the coils of which passes the screw-rod I of the lockinghead J, said screw-rod I fitting into a correspondingly-sized opening in the top of the coupling-journal D, to attach it to the clamping-plate B, as shown in the drawings. The locking-head J is provided with the thumbpiece K, to assist in the operation of the devlce.
The construction of my invention being as described, it will be observed that when the same is applied to a door or gate, as shown in Fig. 1, the springAcan be regulated or tightened up by first turning the thumb screw K of the locking-head J around until the lugs c on the coupling-journal D drop partially down from the ratchet-teeth d, when, by applying a wrench to the angular neck E, the journal D may be revolved, carrying the spring A, until the desired tension is given to the spring, so as to cause the same to either hold the door opened or closed, according to the direction of the tension of the spring, when the thumb-screw K of the locking-head J is turned in the opposite direction, thereby drawing the lugs 0 up into the ratchet-teeth (1, locking the parts securely together.
A modification of my invention is represented in Fig. 2, in which the coupling-journal D is provided with a screw-bolt, which passes up through the coiled spring in the clampingplate B, and is furnished with an ornamental nut or locking-head at the top, to connect the several parts for operation, the coupling-journal D being also provided with an angular collar, 0, in place of the lugs c, which fits in a correspondingly-sized opening, cl, in the bottom of the clamping-plate B, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, anything shown or described in my former patent, No. 210,758, and dated December 10, 1878; but
I claim- In a door or gate spring, the combination, with the clamping-plate B and tension-spring A, of the coupling-journal D to which the up- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as per end of the springAis connected, provided my own invention 1 affix my signature in with the angular portion E and lugs c, the presence of two witnesses. clamping-plate B, provided with a cylindrical 5 recess, 0, ratchet-teeth d, and spiral spring H, IRA S. DAVIS.
and the locking-head J, having a screw-rod V I, connecting it with the coupling-journal, the Witnesses several parts constructed and adapted to be J. WILLARD BABBITT, applied to a door or gate substantially in the EDWARD CAMPBELL.
IO manner herein shown and described.
