DENTAL JAW-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,525, dated March 16, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, GEORGE H. HURD, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jaw-Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to dentistry, and more particularly to an improved device for retaining the mouth in an open position while the dentist is employed in filling or extracting teeth, or performing any other operation upon the teeth or interior of the mouth.
My invention consists in the combination, with a standard having headed extremities respectively provided with end recesses, of flexible tips fitted in the latter and formed with concave outer faces, said brace being adapted to be placed between a single tooth of the upper jaw and a single tooth of the lower jaw. In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of different forms of my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view of one form of my invention, illustrating its construction. Fig. 3 illustrates the manner of ap plying my device to the mouth of a patient.
In the drawings, A represents the central portion or body of my device; B B, its recessed ends, and O O concave flexible tips adapted to fit the recessed ends B B.
In constructing my device I prefer to make the outer surfaces of the flexible tips concave. This construction prevents the whole from displacement, the contraction of the muscles of the mouth further tending to secure it more rigidly and to prevent the possibility of escape.
My device is used by placing one of the concave flexible tips upon a tooth in the upper jaw and the other flexible tip upon a tooth in the lower jaw, thus bracing the jaw open.
Havingthus described my invention, What I claim is- A jaw-brace consisting in the combination,
with a standard, A, having headed extremities B, respectively provided with end recesses, of flexible tips 0, fitted in the latter and formed with concave outer faces, said brace being adapted to be placed between a single tooth of the upper jaw and a single tooth of the lower jaw, substantially as set forth.
