SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,666, dated December 27, 1898.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE S. HEINEKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to artificial teeth; and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of such teeth for pivot as well as bridge work in the mouth.
The principal objects of my present invention are, first, to provide an artificial tooth with a vertical polysided or cylindriform pin or pivot baked or fused into the tooth and notched at the upper end and a transverse fastening-pin baked or fastened into and projecting from the inner side of the tooth and engaging the notch of said vertical pin or pivot of the tooth, the latter made tapering to extend into and be cemented in a natural root of the gums, and, second, to provide an artificial tooth with a vertical hollow pin or pivot secured to a metal plate baked or fused to the crown portion of the tooth to receive a band of gold or other metal, and said hollow pin or pivot engaged at the upper end by a transverse pin of the tooth projecting from the crown portion thereof, so as to readily enter and be secured to a natural root of the gums, whereby access to the apical foramen may be had or peridental trouble or disorder about the base of a natural root be treated, and especially adapting such a tooth for pivot and bridge work in the mouth and also enabling by the removal of the filling of amalgam, gutta-percha, or other suitable material in the event of disease about the root, the same being readily reached through the interior of said hollow pin or pivot for the treatment of the diseased or disordered root or nerve-tissues without removing the tooth, or, again, in the event of the tooth being broken, to readily apply another to the secured pin or pivot in the natural root in a bed of cement or other material.
My invention consists of an artificial tooth when constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- I Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a tooth provided with a cylindriform vertical pin or pivot baked, fused, or otherwise secured into the tooth and held at the upper end by a fastening-pin and the said vertical pin or pivot of the tooth projecting therefrom, the same embodying main features of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the tooth of Fig. 1, showing the means for fastening the notched and tapering projecting pin or pivot of the tooth at the upper end of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of a modified form of a tooth of my invention provided with a hollow vertical pin or pivot fused, baked, or otherwise secured into the tooth, and with a metal plate baked, fused, or otherwise secured into or formed integral with the tooth at or about the crown portion of the same, and the said hollow pin or pivot projecting downward from the tooth and the said plate adapted to receive a band partially around the same to protect the rear wall of the tooth in use. Referring to the drawings, a represents an artificial tooth,of porcelain or other preferred material, provided with a polysided or cylindriform pin or pivot 11, either hollow or solid and fused, baked, fitted, or otherwise secured into the body of the tooth a and extending, preferably, to the rear surface a of the same, whereabout at the upper end is formed a notch 1), adapted to engage a fastening-pin c, secured into, baked, or otherwise made a part of the tooth a, and of the form as shown in either Figs. 1 and 2 or in Figs. 3 and 4. The pin or pivot Z) projects downward from the tooth some distance, so as to be inserted into a natural root of the upper or lower jaw of the mouth and fastened to place by means of cement or other suitable material introduced into a cavity of the root. The hollow pin or pivot b of any of the forms shown in Figs. 3, 4c, and 5 is adapted to be filled from the terminal point of the pin or pivot about the natural root or nerve-tissues of the gums to the rear face at the opposite end of the pin or pivot Z),in the artificial tooth a, with an amalgam, gutta-percha,or other suitable substance or matter, so that when occasion requires this internal filling may be removed to treat a disease or disorder of the nerve-tissues of the natural root or peridental trouble about the root with the bones of the jaws without removing said artificial tooth. The base a of the tooth a is made V or other shape, so as to be fitted with a complemental crown-plate f, of platinum or other suitable material, and projecting slightly beyond the surrounding wall of the tooth to permit a dentist to apply partially around the tooth a band of gold or other metal 9 thereto, as illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, to protect the rear wall of the tooth a, as the securing-pin of the tooth at the upper end of the pin 0 protects the pin 6, against movement and breakage of the tooth a about that portion of the same.

An artificial tooth provided with a vertical pivot or pin baked, fused or fastened into the tooth and notched at the upper end, and a transverse pin baked, fused or fastened into the tooth and projecting from the inner side and adapted to engage the notch of said vertical pivot or pin, and said vertical pivot so as to readily enter and be secured into a natural root of the gums, substantially as and for the purposes described.

An artificial tooth provided with a vertical hollow pivot or pin secured to a metal plate and baked or fused in or to the tooth and said pivot or pin notched at the upper end, and a transverse securing-pin baked or fastened into the upper portion of the tooth and engaging the notch of said vertical pivot or pin, substantially as and for the purposes described.
