Description
0.3. BUSEY. Dental Rubber-Dam Clamp.
No. 207,103 Patented Aug. 20,1878.
WITNESSES. 'INVENTOR.
NPETERS. PHUTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. O. O.
UNITED STATES PATENT -OFFIGEQ CHARLES E. BUSEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL RUBBER -DAM CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207, 103, dated August 20, 1878 application filed January 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BUSEY, of the city of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps for Dental Rubber Dams, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of dental rubber-dam clamps that are held in position on the tooth by the action of a spring. In filling carious teeth it is frequently the case that the gums are higher on the neck of the teeth on one side than on the other side of the same teeth. Where this peculiarity of the gums exists the retention of the rubber dam in itsposition on the neck of the tooth, so as to efiectually exclude moisture from the cavity to be filled, is more difiicult, most of the clamps now in use, when employed in the position referred to, being liable to slip ofl, and otherwise serve their purpose imperfectly.
The object of my invention is to provide a spring so adapted that different-shaped clamping-jaws, suitable for any of the teeth, maybe inserted, and which may be adjusted in different positions to suit the various formations of gums.
My invention consists in providing the ends of a bent spring of the usual form with vertical eyes and set-screws, whereby the shanks of separately-formed clamping-jaws may be independently adjusted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of my clamp. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a front view with jaws adjusted alike. Fig. 4 is a front view, showing jaws adjusted diflerentl y. Fig. 0 spring without the jaws. the clamping-jaws.
The letter A represents the spring; 0, the vertical eye, through the side of which enters the set-screw d. The clamping-jaws e are made separately and in pairs of any desired size or shape. Each jaw is provided with a shank, f, for insertion in the eye of the spring, where it may be set and retained in various positions by the set-screw. The spring is bent on each side to form loops at n to receive the ends of the clamp-forceps, which are employed for inserting this class of clamps in the mouth and adjusting them on the tooth.
By this arrangement one spring-clamp, with an assortment of jaws, will cost much less than the same number of any clamp now used, and at same time will be more serviceable.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a clamp for dental rubber dams, the bent spring A, having on the ends the vertical eyes a, which are provided with the setscrews d, whereby the shanks of the clamping-jaws may be vertically and independently adjusted.
2. In combination with a spring-clamp for dental rubber dams, having an adjusting and securing device, the separately-formed clamping-jaws e, of any size or shape, provided with shanks f, as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
' CHARLES E. BUSEY.
