PATENT OFFICE.
BENTON J. FIELD, or LEAKSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
DENTAL lMPRESSl ON-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 274,299, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed November 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. J. FIELD, of Leaksville, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Dental Impression- Gups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, which form'part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device to be employed in connection with the dental impression-cups, which are used to hold the wax, plaster, or other material when taking the impression of the upper part of the mouth for the purpose of forming the dental plate for artificial teeth; and it has for its objects to provide certain means whereby the wax, plaster, or other material may beconfined to the cup and prevented from passing too far back into the month, which causes restlessness and retching, and renders it difficult to obtain a perfect impression.
The invention further has for its objects to provide for forcing the plaster, wax, or other material into all the irregularities of the mouth and between the teeth, if there be any, and to indicate to the dentist the proper length of the denture by markingthe line ot'juncture of the hard and soft palate, as more fully hereinafter specified. a y
These objects I'attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- V Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a' dental cup, showing my improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Theletter A'indicates a dental cup of the 0 ordinary or any approved description, which is provided with the usual handle, D.
The letter E indicates a plate or stop, which may be constructed of metal or other suitable material, which is attached to one end of a spring arm or arms, F, secured in any convenient manner to the handle D. In the present instance the arms are constructed of steel or other spring-wire bent and coiled at each side at the rear, as indicated by the letter G, and provided with acentral bend, H, extendingforward, forming a base, which may be secured to the handle by means of a screw, I, or other fastening device.
, As constructed it'will be observed that the device may be applied to any dental cup. The stop when the device is in place is just at the rear edge of the plate. When the cup is inserted in the mouth, the stop, by reason ofthe spring-support, will yield and adapt itself to the depth of the roof of the mouth, and by pressing upward after passing the line of the hard palate will indicate to the dentist the line 7 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. An improved device to be employed in connection with a dental impression-cup, the same consisting of a stop or plate secured to a spring-arm. which is adapted to be secured to the said impression-cup, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a dental cup, of a stop or plate extending upward at the rear of the cup and secnredto a spring-arm, which is secured to the handle of the cup and adapted to operate substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the stop or plate,
of the spring-arms, constructed of wire, bent into coils at the rear and formed with a centralforward bend, by which it may be secured to the handle of a dental cup by means of a screw or other fastening device, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENTON JEREMY FIELD.
