E. P. BROWN.
DENTAL RUBBER-DAM CLAMP.
No. 185,665. Patented Dec. 26, 1876.

E. PARMLY BROWN, OF FLUSHING, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL RUBBER-DAM CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,665, dated December 26, 1876; application filed April Li, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. PARMLY BROWN, of Flushing, State of New York, have invented an Improved Rubber-Dam Clamp, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to produce an adjustable clamp for the use of dentists.
The rubber-dam clamp is used for the purpose of holding the rubber in place on the tooth while inserting fillings. The clamps made heretofore are held in position on the tooth by the action of a spring which forms a part of the clamp, and the clamp has the following faulty points, viz: It cannot be adjusted so as to fit teeth of even slightly difl'erent shapes; it is liable to fly off from the the teeth, and, by letting in moisture, ruin a partially-completed operation; it is painfully severe on the patient, because its tension cannot be adjusted; the spring, which is necessarily made high, prevents the patient from closing the month, which prevents swallowing the saliva that accumulates, and in long operations becomes very tedious. I effectually obviate all of these difficulties by making the clamp adjustable by means of screws The clamps are made of several different shapes, for use on teeth in diflerent parts of the mouth. The accompanying drawing shows one form, and the principle upon which all are made. By properly manipulating the screws (which are made capstan-head. ed, and one of which is also slotted,) the clamp can be so adjustedas to fit accurately teeth of widely difierent shapes, and it can be so fitted as not to be in the slightest degree painful to the patient, and at the same time is not liable to fly off from the tooth, and it also allows the patient to nearly or quite close the mouth.
What I claim as new Is- A rubber-dam clamp, of Whatever shape, made adjustable by means of screws, as and tor the purposes set forth in the annexed specification.
E. PARMLY BROWN.
