2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in a dispensing comb for dispensing viscous semiuids, such as tar preparations, heavy ointments and the like for the treatment of the scalp and hair, wherein a chamber is provided having one side thereof fully open to render the interior thereof fully accessible for the introduction thereinto of salves, ointments and other comparatively thick unguents having a lack of mobility, said chamber operating in conjunction, when closed, with a plunger operated exteriorly of said chamber, to
force said viscous ointments through tubular teeth communicating with said chamber.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved dispensing comb.
Another object is to provide a new and improved comb of the character described having improved means for application to the scalp and hair of viscous ointments and the like.
A further object is to provide a new and improved comb of the type described having improved and readily accessible means for the introduction of thick or viscous ointments into a chamber to the full capacity thereof.
A still further object is to provide a new and improved dispensing comb having a greatly simplirled and economically produced construction, wherein the several parts may be completely separated for cleansing purposes, and a construction having a maximum efiiciency for the application of heavy -salves and ointments to the scalp.
The invention consists in the simplified construction and arrangements of the several parts as disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present application, and vin which- Fig. l is a partly broken side elevation of my improved dispensing comb;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1, in the direction indicated; and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the plunger removed from the chamber.
Referring to the drawing;
The numeral 1 is used to designate in general a comb preferably provided with a suitable eX- tended handle 2 and a chamber 3 extending substantially throughout the length of the comb proper and having one side thereof open, preferably on one side of said comb I, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The chamber 3 may be provided with vents 4 at each end of the top thereof. The comb I is further provided with tubular teeth 6 communicating with the chamber 3.
Suitable V-shaped grooves I are provided paralleling adjacent edges and one end of the open side of the chamber 3, within which grooves is slidably mounted a cover 8 having beveled edges 9 for snugly engaging said V-shaped grooves 'I.
A plunger Ill is slidably and longitudinally disposed within the chamber 3 and is preferably hanged or ribbed as at II, substantially around the edges thereof to add rigidity thereto, said plunger I0 being further provided with a preferably lateral slot I2, in one side edge thereof, rotatably engaged by an annular groove I4 on the inner end of a screw I6 screw-threaded through the back of said comb I and into the chamber 3, the outer or exterior end of said screw I3 being provided with a knurled or milled head I'I.
In operation:
For the convenient introduction into the chamber 3 of comparatively thick or heavy ointments to be applied to the scalp or hair, the cover 8 is moved longitudinally within its grooves 'I to fully open the chamber 3 throughout the entire length thereof. The screw I6 is then rotated to move the plunger I0 against the top of the chamber 3 to render available and readily accessible substantially the entire capacity of said chamber for the introduction thereinto of heavy or viscous ointments, such as tar preparations and the like, for application to the scalp or hair.
When the chamber 3 is lled, the slide or cover 8 is moved to completely close the open side of the chamber 3, the forward or leading chamfered or beveled edge 9 of said cover 8 readily removing or cutting any surplus material extending beyond the confines of said chamber 3, so that substantially no vacuities or spaces are left, thereby assuring a capacity charge of said chamber.
When the tubular teeth 6 are moved through the hair or over the scalp to be treated, not shown, the knurled head I'I of the screw I6 may be conveniently rotated by the thumb of the hand grasping the handle 2 so that the plunger IU may be moved to exert a pressure against the contents of said chamber 3 and extrude said contents through said tubular teeth 6 and onto or throughout the surface traversed. During such movement of the plunger lll, air may be admitted to the space back of said plunger through the vents 4 to prevent formation of a vacuum back of said plunger.
When the chamber 3 is exhausted, all of the parts may be conveniently removed and thoroughly cleansed by rst removing the cover 8, then moving the plunger I laterally from the chamber 3 to disengage the slot I2 from the annular groove I4 of the screw I6. The screw I6 may then be unscrewed from its engaging relation with the back of the comb I and the noW completely separated parts may be cleaned and returned to operative positions by reversing the order just described.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1.A dispensing comb having a longitudinally disposed chamber within and extending the length of the back of said comb and having one side of said chamber open throughout the length thereof, said comb being further provided With tubular teeth communicating with said chamber; a cover slidably mounted on said comb to close said chamber; a plunger slidably mounted Within said chamber; and a screw detachably engaging said plunger and extending exteriorly of said chamber to move said Vplunger to dispense contents from said chamber.
2. A dispensing comb having a handle and a rectangular chamber, open throughout the length of one side thereof, in the back of said comb, and tubular teeth communicating with said chamber; a cover slidably mounted on said comb to close the open side of said chamber; a rectangular plunger slidably mounted in said chamber and having a lateral slot in one side thereof; and a screw mounted through the back of said comb and extending intol said chamber and having an annular groove detachably engaging the slot in the plunger to move the same to extrude contents of said chamber through said tubular teeth.
