. To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known that l, HARRISON OGEORN, of `the city ofBichmond, in the county ot' Wayne and"` State of Indiana, have invented certain nevvandl useful Iinprovem ents in Folding Gabi ne Beds; and Ido herebydeclare the follow- 'ngto be a full, clear, and exact description f `of thesaine, reference being made to Athe `accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and in which-.- `Figure l represents a perspectivefview of inyiniproved bed when folded torepreseut an l y upright piece of furniture. Fig. 2 represents anelevation, showing `t'he front when opened y i'orwrifing; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the saine through the line x m of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a l perspective view of the bed when unfolded and extended; Fig. 5, a detached sectionalview T of thedevices for securing the sections ofthe bed together when folded to representan upright piece of furniture. Fig. 6 represents a side view of the supporting-legs and other de` `j vices for preventing lateral Inotion of the bed. Fig. 7 represents a sectional view of the same, and Fig.8, a detached view of the devices for I y "securiugthe legs to the sides of the sections.
\ `The object of my invention is the production of an ornamental foldiiigcabiiiet-bed containing a receptacle in front for holdingsmall articles, supporting-legs being pivoted at its sides, at or near the center of gravity of each section, so that it will `balance in all positions and be easilyand readily folded and unfolded, and extended to form a complete bed, with bedding in place ready for use as soon as the bed is unfolded, and that when notin use as a bed it may be folded into a neat, compact piece of furniture, in which all the pillows and necessary bedding for the coldest weather are securely contained out of sight and protected from smoke, dirt, dust, Sto.; and my,inven 1tion consists in a novel combination of parts for supporting the bed both in afolded and unfolded position, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims. y In the drawings, A Arepresent the supporting-legs, and B C thecase, of the folding l cabinetbed, usually constructed to Vrepresent o a cabinet-organ, although it may be made to UNITED STATES represent a desk, secretary, upright-piano,

CABINE- FOLDING BED.

l l l Application filed September 24, 1879.
of thev side rails, D D', and extending down-` ward on the inside thereof.
The front of the section B of the bed is prol vided in its upper portion With a triangularshaped recess, the lower portion of which is separated from the upper portion by a shelf, F, extending across its entire length, near the bottom of the inclosed recess, which recess is divided into compartments by vertical partition-boards (see Fig. 2) for the receptionof paper, books`,linen, or toilet or other articles, or said recess above the shelf F may be filled with drawers.
Above the shelf F, and extending back to the front of section B, are placed vertically triangular-shaped pieces K, provided with vertical slots M for the reception of the horizontal,
flexible, and removable slats N, extending part or all the Way across said section, and wide enough and far enough apart to form suitable vertical spaces R between them for the reception of books, bed-linen, or other articles.
A hinged door, G, is provided for the recess, having firmly-attached quadrants Q, with slots S extending nearly their entirelength,.and
through which pass screws or bolts b, so that when `the door Gr is let down said screws or `bolts b catch the quadrants and hold the door firmly in a horizontal position, to be used as a writing-table, lamp-stand, &'c., said door being held in place when closed bye springcatch, c, engaging with a keeper on the under face of the top of section B. y
The top I o'f the sections B O, which is the headboard of the bed when unfolded, forms part of the rear section, G, and projects entirely over the front section, B, Where the latter is secured to the top I by a spring-bolt, d, keeper d2, and button e When folded up, :as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The front and rear sections, B C, are provided Y IOO upon their opposite sides with a pair of supporting-legs, A A, having casters, whereby the bed can be easily moved from room to room, either in an open or closed position. These legs are pivoted near their upper ends,.by pins 19 19, to the sides of the sections, as near the center of gravity of the respective sections as possible, so that the legs stand in a perpendicular position when the sections Iare unfolded and in an inclinedposition when the sections are closed, thus forming inclined braces as well as supporting-legs 5 and said legs are provided with headed lugs r', attached to the inside of the legs a short distance below the point at which theyare pivoted to the sides of the sections. 'Iheheaded portionsof theselngs project into or pass through slotted plates r, attached to the sides of the sections, the slots in said plates being curved and nearly at right angles with the legs when in use, thus holding them iirmly and preventing lateral motion.
To put on or take. olil the legs the pivotingbolt must be removed and the leg turned so that its headed boltis lengthwise with the slot in theplate, when it can be taken oft or put on and the pivot-pin replaced, when the long ends of the headed portions oi" the lugs will engage with the plates r and readily move from one end to the other of said slots, the wood back of the plates being cut away for that purpose, said lugs resting at one end of the slotted plates when the bed is open, and at the other end when closed, thus staying the sections when opened or closed.
At or near the bottom, on theinside of these legs, Lipper and lower stay-rods, Y Z, are placed, one end of each of these being fastened to the leg near the bottom, and the other end at or near the lower outer corners of the folding sections B C.
A portion, 0, of the bottom of the section C is provided with sides 71 and a head or end,
' i, the sides li being pivoted to the side rails,
D', near their ends, whereby the part O may be raised and lowered to assume a horizontal or inclined/position, and secured by springbolts operated by a cord, y, which engage with metal racks 7c, secured to the sides D.
A mattress, P, is jointed to the middle to correspond with the hinged sections, whereby it will readily fold within said sections when closed and leave sufficient space for the necessary bedding; and by increasing the depth of said sections springs of any. convenient form may be applied under the mattress, and strong cords secured at the head and foot of the mattress, with'loops to engage with hooks on the sections, may be used for securing the mattress in position at all times unless detached for the removal of the mattress.
When the bed is in use to represent a piece of furniture the door G may be let .down to form a writing-table; and when it is desired to convertit into a bed it should be moved out in the room to the desired position, when the sections canbe unlocked by pressing down on button c, thus releasing the spring-bolt-d from its keeper, when, by slightly pulling on said sections, they will gradually unfold to a horizontal position, the legs in the meantime, through the medium of the rods Y Z, being made to assume a perpendicular position for supporting the sections, as shown in Fig. 4, stayed or braced by said rods, said sections being secured in the horizontal position by drop-catches f engaging with pins at or near thehinged ends of the sections.
To close the bed it should be made up neatly and the bedding tucked down around the inattress, when the drop-catches are released from engagement with the pins by pulling on a cord, t, and a slight push upward and forward at the head of the bed causes the sections where the rods Y Z are attached to move apart, and thus draw the legs toward each other at the bottom, by which the bed will be easily and readily closed, the legs forming inclined braces as well as supports for the sections, thus preventing` their being easily thrown open, and which is also assisted ',by the spring-bolt d of section B engaging with the keeper of section C. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a folding cabinet-bed, the combination, with the hinged sections B C, of the self-adjusting legs A A, pivoted on the opposite sides of each section, and the rods Y Z, pivotally connecting the legs upon each -side to the lower end of the opposite section, whereby said legs form inclined braces and supports when the sections are closed and vertical supports when the sections are open, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a folding cabinet-bed, the combination ofthe hinged sections B G, provided with the plates r, having curved slots, and the legs A A, pivoted to said sections, and provided with the headed lugs r', substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
3. In a folding cabinet-bed, the combination of the hinged sectionsvB C, provided with the slotted plates r, the legs A A, pivoted to said sections and provided with the headed lugs r', and the connectingrods Y Z, substantially' as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
