` UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
THoMAs J. Aus'TIN, 0E BELLE PLAIN, TEXAS.
\ WASHING-MACHINE SPECIFICATION forming' part orf LettersPatent No. 224,321, dated February 10, 1880.
l Application led August 20, 187B. y I t To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatI, THoMAs J. AUSTIN, of Belle Plain, in the county of Callahan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do'hereby declare that the` following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had tothe accompanying'drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,
which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates t the class of washing-machines which employ a circular corrugated or iiuted bed with a conical roller re-` volving about a central post; and nay-invention consistsfof certain improvements 1n the construction and arrangement of the parts,
which are fully shown and set forth in the following description and claims. Figure 1 is a plan of a machine which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central cross-section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the flue B and lire-box E, and
Fig. 4. is a front elevation of the Jnire-box E.
The tub has the central portion, G, of the'bottom raised, making a drum having outwardlysloping sides, `and around this drum .there is an annular trough, in which the conical roller B travels. The sides A of the tub and the drum G are riveted to upturned flanges on the outer and inner edges, respectively, of the bottom of this-annular trough, .and the sides A of the tub are extended down around the circular liue B.
The tub has the `spout D, provided with a stop-cock for drawing off the water, and it is Y hinged to the flue B, on which it rests, the
-hinge being placed under the spout D, and a hasp-fastening is placed on the opposite side. The ue B is circular in form, extending around under the aforesaid annular trough. E is a fire-box', removably attached to the line B, and H is a smoke-pipe. "The whole is supported on a proper frame, N. l
A second or false bottom-'made of fluted zinc or copper, is placed in the bottom of the aforesaid annular trough. This is made inv two pieces, in order that it may be conveniently taken out and put in. e y
The zinc bottom is perforated in order that the hot water and steam may readily circulate through it.
The conical-roller B is formed of two circular end pieces, the conical surface being made of rungs tenoned into the end pieces. These run gs have open spaces between them, so that the watercan pass through. The journal of the roller is fastened to one end of the curved arm X, which arm passes. up over the drum Gr, andis hinged at the other endto the arm L. The arm X has a slot, through which the shaft'P passes, while the arm L is clamped to the shaft by a set-screw, K, and has the guides I, between which the arm X pl. ys.
The coiledspring S, encircling the shaft l?, is placed between the cog-.wheel T and the lever X, and presses down the roller B, pro- .ducin g a firm and uniform pressure, as Well as affording` the necessary elasticity.
The shaft P passes down through the drum G, and its lower end is supported by an iron 'brace spanning the bottom of the drum. A `nut `on the bottom of the shaft retains it in and bolts, which standard is fastened to the.
side of the tub, and the other end of said shaft is supported by the coupling-joint U.
The shaft F carries the small cog-wheel D, which meshes into the larger wheel T on the shaft P.
The shafts, gearing, and Vroller can all be removed by unfastening the collar-block which fastens theshaft F to the standard O, and removing the nuton the bottom of the shaft I?,
then they canbelifted out.
The operation of the machine -is plain. The clothes are placed in the annular trough formed between the drum and the sides of the tub.
The water and suds are heated by the fire below, and the conical roller R is driven round in the trough over the clothes by means of the shafts and gearing, and washes and cleans the clothes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is` Y l. The combination of a washing-machine having an annular trough. with the circular IOO flue B, {ire-box E, and stove-pipe E, all subannular trough, ofthe crankshaft F, shaft P, stantally as described, and for the purpose coupling-joint U, gear-wheels D and T, standset forth. ard O, spring S, arms X and L, and conical 2. The c0111binatiou,\vithaWashing-machine roller, all substantially as described, and for 5 having an annular trough, of the conical roller the purpose set-forth.
R, arm X, arm L, shaft IE', and spring S, with mechanism, substantially as described, for ro- THOMAS J AUSTIN tating the shaft, all substantially as described, Witnesses: v and for the purpose set forth. GEO. A. PRESTON, 1o 3. The combination, with a tub having an JESSE COBB.
