Description

G. W. DORRIS. Washing-Machine.
No. 223,717. atented Jan. 20,1880.
FV LITNESSES INVENTOR /e/ dew/@7923 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DORRIS, OF ELGIN, TEXAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DORRIS, of Elgin, in the county of Bastrop and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the machine, taken through the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation taken through the line a; 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a part of the upper roller.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in combining a lower cylinder having longitudinal spiral grooves with an upper cylinder having longitudinal straight grooves and holes, as hereinafter described.
A. represents the wash-tub, which is made with vertical sides and inclined or flaring ends. The bottom B of the wash-tub is made of I sheet metal, so that heat may be applied to it.
To the lower corners of the sides of the washtub A are attached sockets G, to receive the upper ends of the legs I). The legs D are made of such a length as to raise the machine to a convenient height.
Beneath the middle part of the bottom B is placed a firechamber or furnace, E, which is attached to and supported by two cross-bars, F. To the ends of the cross-bars F are attached the lower ends of the hanging rods or bars G, the upper ends of which are hooked upon pins attached to the sides of the washtub A, or are otherwise connected with the said wash-tub.
In one side of furnace E is a door, H, and in iIS opposite side is a collar, I, to receive a pipe, J, to carry oif the smoke. \Vith this construction, by making a small fire in the furnace E the water in the wash-tub A may be kept at a proper temperature.
K are two uprights, which are placed in grooves in the middle parts of the sides of the tub A, and are connected at their upper ends by a cross-bar, L. In hearings in the lower parts of the uprights K revolve the journals of the lower cylinder, M, which has slightly spiral longitudinal grooves N formed in it.
of Letters Patent No. 223,71'7, dated January 20, 1880.
Application filed October 2-2, 1879.
O is the upper cylinder, which has longitudinal grooves 1? formed in it, and a series of holes, Q, formed in each groove P. With this construction the grooves in the cylinder allow the water to flow 011' as it is pressed from the clothes, and the holes in the upper cylinder facilitate the operation by allowing the water a further escapement by compressing the air that may be in the said holes.
The journals of the flipper cylinder, 0, revolve in bearings R, which slide up and down in slots in the uprights K, and are held down by spiral springs S, placed in the said slots above the said bearin gs. With this construction the upper cylinder, can move upward to accommodate itse to the thickness of the clothes being operated upon, and will be held down by the springs S to apply the desired pressure to the clothes.
To one of the journals of the upper cylinder, 0, is attached, or upon it is formed, a crank, T, by means of which the said cylinder is revolved. The lower cylinder, M, is revolved by friction.
In using the machine the clothes to be washed are passed back and forth between the cylinders M O, and are washed clean very quickly, the grooves and perforations of the said cylinders hastening the operation by allowing the water to escape freely.
To the flaring ends of the wash-tub A are attached rub-boards U, upon which any parts of the clothes that may be especially soiled may be rubbed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V In a washing-machine, the combination of the lower cylinder, M, having longitudinal spiral grooves, with the upper cylinder, 0, having longitudinal straight grooves P and holes Q, as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE WASHINTON DORRIS.
